If a Puppeteer screenshot looks different from a screenshot taken in Chrome, first make the comparisons equivalent: use the same browser build and headless mode, set the same viewport and device scale before navigation, match screen dimensions and screenshot options, then control when the page is captured. Puppeteer launches headless by default, and its legacy headless shell is not interchangeable with regular Chrome. These checks can narrow the cause; exact pixel identity still depends on the page and capture environment.
Start by recording what produced each image
Before changing CSS, write down the settings for both captures. “Chrome” can mean a user-installed browser in a visible window, current headless Chrome, or Puppeteer’s separate legacy shell. A screenshot comparison is only useful when you know which of these produced each image.
- Puppeteer version and actual Chrome version
- Operating system and, for the reference, whether Chrome was headful or headless
- Whether Puppeteer used current headless mode or
headless: 'shell' - CSS viewport width and height, device scale factor, mobile emulation and touch emulation
- Browser screen or window dimensions
- Screenshot region and options, including full-page, clipping, transparency and capture surface
- How the page was made ready for capture, including fonts, images, animations and asynchronous content
Puppeteer v20 and later uses Chrome for Testing. Check its supported-browser release mapping and compare the actual builds, rather than assuming a local Chrome installation matches Puppeteer’s bundled browser. Puppeteer permits choosing an executable path or Chrome channel, but documents its compatibility guarantee for the bundled browser in its launch options.
Match Chrome’s headless or headful mode
Puppeteer launches headless by default. For the first controlled comparison, use Puppeteer’s bundled browser with regular current headless mode; if the target image came from visible Chrome, also test a headful Puppeteer run. Do not treat the legacy shell as synonymous with current Chrome headless: Puppeteer describes the old headless mode as chrome-headless-shell, a separate binary, and notes that it does not completely match regular Chrome behavior. See the Puppeteer headless modes guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Pin the Puppeteer/browser version during a comparison and record it. Changing browser mode while also changing versions or viewport makes it harder to tell which difference matters.
Set the page viewport and device scale before navigating
The CSS viewport is distinct from the browser window or screen. Set the reference width, height and deviceScaleFactor explicitly before page.goto(). If the reference uses a mobile device profile, align isMobile and hasTouch too; changing mobile or touch emulation can reload the page. Puppeteer’s Page.setViewport() documentation describes these settings.

})();
The dimensions here are an example baseline, not a universal recommendation. Replace them with the values from the Chrome reference. This example uses CommonJS and assumes Puppeteer is installed in the project; use the matching module syntax if the project is configured for ES modules.
Match screen dimensions separately
Some pages inspect screen values or depend on window geometry, so matching the CSS viewport may not be enough. In headless mode, the documented screen default is 800×600 unless --window-size is supplied. Puppeteer’s --screen-info option is headless-only. Configure these only when the reference’s screen or window values are relevant; they do not replace setViewport(). See the screen configuration guide.

Make screenshot options equivalent
Two captures can differ because they show different regions or backgrounds even when the rendered page is identical. Compare a viewport shot with a viewport shot, not with a full-page capture or a clipped element. Set the options explicitly for a reproducible test. Puppeteer’s documented defaults include fullPage: false, omitBackground: false and fromSurface: true; the complete set is in ScreenshotOptions.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'puppeteer.png',
fullPage: false,
omitBackground: false,
fromSurface: true,
});
If the Chrome reference is full-page, clipped, or transparent, configure Puppeteer to capture the same region and background. The Puppeteer screenshots guide covers page and element captures.

Capture the same page state
Matching browser settings will not align images if one was captured before the other page finished changing. Make sure both captures reach the same meaningful state: fonts and images have loaded, animations are at a comparable point, and asynchronous content has settled. Navigation wait conditions are useful controls, but there is no single wait strategy that suits every site. For a page with a known readiness signal, wait for that signal; for dynamic content, use an appropriate explicit wait or delay and verify the resulting state.
Do not assign a remaining mismatch to GPU/compositing, color profiles, operating-system font rendering or another environment variable without reproducing it. Once the browser, viewport, screen and capture options match, investigate these variables using the actual page, browser versions, operating system, fonts and both images.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Layout or breakpoints differ | CSS viewport width and height, then mobile emulation | Set viewport values before navigation and align isMobile and hasTouch. |
| Text and images have different apparent sizes | deviceScaleFactor and browser build |
Use the reference scale and compare the actual browser versions. |
| Elements depending on screen geometry differ | Screen/window dimensions versus CSS viewport | Configure headless window size separately where relevant. |
| One image includes more page content or a different background | Viewport versus full page, clip, omitBackground and fromSurface |
Make the capture region and options explicit on both sides. |
| Some content is missing or shifts between runs | Page readiness, fonts, images, animations and asynchronous updates | Wait for the page-specific ready state and compare captures made at the same point. |
| Mismatch remains after settings are aligned | Headful versus headless, browser version, OS and font environment | Reproduce with the same page and collect both images plus the full environment details before naming a cause. |

If your goal is to obtain a clean website screenshot rather than reproduce a particular local Chrome environment, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF. The service accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
