If a Puppeteer screenshot is cut off, first decide whether you want the visible browser area or the entire document. Set the page viewport with page.setViewport() for the dimensions you want, and use page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) to request the full page. A larger browser window or headless screen does not, by itself, make a screenshot capture the whole document.

Fix the screenshot based on what is being cut off

Use the setting that matches the intended capture. The page viewport controls the visible page dimensions; fullPage requests a capture of the full document. A clip option can restrict the image to a specific rectangle.

What you want Relevant API or setting What it controls
Choose the visible page dimensions page.setViewport({ width, height }) The page viewport. Set it before navigation when possible.
Capture the whole document page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) Requests a full-page screenshot; the documented default for fullPage is false.
Capture only a rectangle clip Restricts the screenshot to the specified region.
Capture a particular component elementHandle.screenshot() Captures an element, scrolling it into view first if needed.
Size a browser window, content area, or headless screen Puppeteer window management or screen configuration A separate sizing layer; it does not replace screenshot options.

Set the viewport before navigating

Page.setViewport() resizes the page viewport. Puppeteer recommends setting it before navigation because some sites do not expect their viewport to change size; in some cases, changing viewport properties can reload the page. See the Puppeteer Page.setViewport() reference.

const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });

This sets a 1440-by-1000 CSS viewport and asks Puppeteer to capture the full document. Change the viewport dimensions to match the layout you need to render. The current API documentation may not match the version installed in your project; check your Puppeteer and browser versions when diagnosing version-specific behavior.

Check for an accidental crop

If your screenshot call includes clip, inspect its x, y, width, and height values. A clip describes the region to capture, so an incorrectly sized or positioned rectangle can make an otherwise correct page look cut off.

Choose the intended capture mode explicitly: use fullPage: true for the full document, or configure a clip for a deliberate crop. Puppeteer’s screenshot API also documents captureBeyondViewport; its default depends on whether clip is supplied. Consult the ScreenshotOptions reference before changing it, particularly when combining it with a clip.

Capture a single element instead of the whole page

When the target is one component, use the element’s screenshot method rather than trying to crop the page by eye. Puppeteer documents that ElementHandle.screenshot() scrolls the element into view if needed and then uses Page.screenshot(). See the ElementHandle.screenshot() reference.

Distinguish page viewport from browser and screen size

Changing a browser window or headless screen is not the same as requesting a full-page screenshot. Puppeteer’s window-management guidance covers Page.resize() for content size and Page.setViewport(null) for removing the default viewport constraint in that context. Its screen-configuration guide says headless mode defaults to one 800×600 screen unless a relevant switch changes it. These settings address browser or screen sizing; use the screenshot’s fullPage option when the goal is the entire document. See Window management and Screen management.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that remains cut off

  1. Decide what should fit. For a fixed visible area, set the viewport width and height. For the entire document, request fullPage: true.
  2. Move viewport setup before navigation. Call page.setViewport() before page.goto() when possible, so the page loads at the intended dimensions.
  3. Review the screenshot options. Check for a clip that limits the result and confirm that fullPage is set for a full-document capture. If using captureBeyondViewport, verify its behavior against the installed Puppeteer version and your clip settings.
  4. Use an element capture for a component. If the target is a specific element, use elementHandle.screenshot() rather than treating the full page as the target.
  5. Check which sizing layer your code changes. Browser content size and headless screen configuration are separate from the page screenshot options.
  6. Reproduce with a minimal call and record versions. Note the installed Puppeteer and browser versions. The official changelog includes historical screenshot-related fixes, including one involving defaultViewport: null after a full-page screenshot; a changelog entry does not establish that your current issue has the same cause. See the Puppeteer changelog.
