Use a CSS selector to find the element, then call screenshot() on its ElementHandle. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if needed:
Capture an element by CSS selector
This example waits for an element matching .target and saves its screenshot as a PNG:

Choose the selector and wait for the element
page.waitForSelector() resolves when the matching element is found, or returns null if it does not appear before the configured wait expires. The null check makes a missing target explicit rather than passing an absent handle to the screenshot call.

Use a selector that identifies the intended element reliably. If the page replaces that element during a rerender, the original handle becomes detached; run the lookup again after the update and screenshot the newly acquired handle.
Output and screenshot options
ElementHandle.screenshot() returns image bytes by default. Supply path to write the image to a file; Puppeteer infers the format from the file extension. You can also set type to choose a format explicitly, or set encoding: 'base64' when you need a base64 string instead of bytes.

- PNG: A suitable default for crisp element captures. The
qualityoption does not affect PNG output. - Clipping: The screenshot options include
clipfor defining a capture region. - Transparent background: Use
omitBackground: truewhen you want the default white background omitted. - Full page:
fullPageis a page-wide option. For a single selected element, use the element handle’s screenshot method.

Locators or an ElementHandle?
Puppeteer recommends locators for selecting and interacting with elements because they wait for the element to be present and in the right state for an action. The screenshot guide demonstrates the lower-level waitForSelector() and ElementHandle route for this task. Troubleshooting
- The selector never matches: Check that the selector matches the page’s actual DOM and that the element has had time to appear. Handle the null result from
waitForSelector()rather than attempting a screenshot with it. - The screenshot throws after a rerender: The handle may have been detached from the DOM. Wait for the update to finish, then call
waitForSelector()again and capture the new handle. - The element is off-screen: Puppeteer attempts to scroll it into view before capture. If the capture still fails, check whether the page changed or removed the element between lookup and screenshot.
- The image format or quality is unexpected: Check the filename extension or set
typeexplicitly. PNG ignoresquality.
