Use page.pdf(options) to control Puppeteer’s PDF paper size, margins, orientation, printed colors, page ranges, and file output. By default, it uses print CSS, letter paper, no margins, no printed backgrounds, and a scale of 1. The examples and option details below follow Puppeteer’s 25.12.0 documentation; check your installed version when a setting’s behavior matters.
Generate a PDF with Puppeteer
Load the page before calling page.pdf(). This example writes a letter-size PDF with half-inch margins and background graphics enabled:

}path is optional. If supplied, it writes the PDF to disk; a relative path is resolved from the current working directory. Without it, Puppeteer does not write a file to disk. See the PDFOptions reference for the documented interface.
Choose who controls paper size
There are three practical ways to set paper geometry. Decide which should take priority before combining options:

- Named paper: Set
format, such as'A4'or'letter'. The documented default isletter. Ifformatis set, it takes precedence overwidthandheight. - Explicit dimensions: Set
widthandheightas numbers or strings with units. Use this when the target page needs custom dimensions rather than a named paper format. - CSS page size: Define size in the page’s CSS
@pagerule and setpreferCSSPageSize: true. This gives CSS page size priority over API paper dimensions. The default isfalse; in that case Puppeteer scales content to fit the selected paper size.
For example, to use a CSS-defined page size:

});Use landscape: true for landscape orientation; its default is false. Choose either dimensions or a named format deliberately, since an explicit format overrides the dimensions.

Set margins and scale
The margin option accepts an object with optional top, bottom, left, and right values. Each value can be a number or a string with a unit. Margins are unset by default.

});scale defaults to 1 and accepts values from 0.1 through 2. Adjusting it changes the scale of printed content; it is separate from choosing paper dimensions and margins.

Control print CSS, backgrounds, and colors
page.pdf() uses print CSS media by default. If the page’s screen styling is what you want in the PDF, switch media before generating the file:

Puppeteer’s print rendering normally modifies colors for printing. To request exact CSS colors in print, use the CSS property -webkit-print-color-adjust in the page’s styles. This is a separate decision from whether background graphics are included.
Select pages and add headers or footers
pageRanges is a string of page ranges. Its empty-string default prints all pages. For example, '1-5, 8, 11-13' selects pages 1 through 5, page 8, and pages 11 through 13.

Headers and footers are disabled by default. Set displayHeaderFooter: true and provide HTML using headerTemplate and/or footerTemplate. Templates can use special classes for injected values: date, title, url, pageNumber, and totalPages.

path: Optional output file path. Relative paths resolve from the current working directory.timeout: Milliseconds to wait for PDF generation; it defaults to30000. Setting it to0disables the timeout. The page’s default timeout can also be changed withPage.setDefaultTimeout().waitForFonts: Defaults totrueand waits fordocument.fonts.ready. The documentation notes that a background page might needPage.bringToFront().outline: Requests a document outline. This option is marked experimental and defaults tofalse.tagged: Requests an accessible tagged PDF. This option is marked experimental and defaults totrue.
Check the protocol if using WebDriver BiDi
The general PDFOptions interface documents more settings than Puppeteer’s WebDriver BiDi support page lists for Page.pdf() and Page.createPDFStream(). The documented BiDi subset is:
format,height, andwidthlandscape,margin, andscalepageRangesandprintBackground
If your workflow depends on header or footer templates, CSS page-size preference, tagged output, or another option outside that list, confirm support for your backend rather than assuming the full general API applies. See Puppeteer’s WebDriver BiDi support documentation.
Troubleshoot common PDF surprises
- The PDF is the wrong paper size: Check whether
formatis set; it overrideswidthandheight. If CSS@pageshould control the size, setpreferCSSPageSize: true. - Content looks scaled or does not match the intended geometry: With the default
preferCSSPageSize: false, Puppeteer scales content to fit the selected paper. Review the paper dimensions and CSS page-size preference together. - Colors or backgrounds are missing: PDF generation uses print media by default, and backgrounds are off unless
printBackground: true. For screen styling, callpage.emulateMediaType('screen')beforepage.pdf(); for exact print colors, use CSS-webkit-print-color-adjust. - Fonts are not ready when output is generated:
waitForFontsdefaults totrue. If generating from a background page, the documentation notes that bringing the page to the front withPage.bringToFront()might be necessary. - PDF generation times out: The default timeout is 30,000 milliseconds. Increase
timeoutfor a slower render, or set it to0to disable the PDF operation’s timeout. Disabling it means generation no longer has that timeout limit. - An option appears ineffective under BiDi: Compare it against the BiDi-specific supported list above. The general API’s wider option set is not documented as fully supported by that backend.
