Both Puppeteer and Playwright can capture screenshots, and neither is proven faster for a batch of thousands of URLs by the official documentation reviewed. Choose based on the browser engines and codebase you already use; then build a bounded, measured queue that reuses browser processes and closes each page or context after its job.
Which should you choose?
For screenshotting thousands of URLs, the library alone is not the deciding factor. Existing code and team experience, required browser engines, state isolation, and the consistency you need from one capture to the next matter more. The documentation describes screenshot APIs and browser lifecycles, but publishes no reliable throughput figure or maximum safe concurrency for this workload.
- Choose Playwright if its browser-engine options or your existing Playwright setup fit the job. Its screenshot documentation demonstrates WebKit and notes Chromium and Firefox as alternatives; check the current installation documentation for supported engines and versions.
- Choose Puppeteer if your project already uses it or its established browser flow fits your deployment and team. Its screenshot guide demonstrates page and element capture.
- Choose neither on speed claims alone. Test both against representative sites and your own worker environment if throughput is a deciding factor.

Treat the input as a queue of independent jobs, not as a reason to start an unlimited number of browsers. Keep a bounded number of jobs active, reuse browser processes across the batch, and release each page or context when its capture finishes. These are practical design recommendations based on the documented browser and page lifecycles, not a published performance guarantee.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Define each job. Store the input URL, output path, navigation timeout, capture settings, and retry policy. Make the retry policy explicit rather than retrying every failure indefinitely.
- Set a concurrency limit. Start conservatively, then adjust using measurements from representative sites and the actual machines or containers you will run. Neither project’s cited documentation establishes a safe number of simultaneous pages for your workload.
- Reuse a browser process. Launch a browser for the worker or batch, rather than launching a fresh process for every URL. Close pages or contexts as jobs finish; close the browser when the worker shuts down.
- Record the outcome per URL. Log the input URL, final URL, elapsed time, completion status, and failure reason. This makes it possible to distinguish slow pages, navigation failures, and capture errors rather than treating every missing image alike.
- Benchmark and tune. On a representative sample, measure navigation success, timeouts, retries, image size, memory use, and completed captures over time. Increase concurrency only while the results remain acceptable for your infrastructure and output requirements.
Isolate site state when it matters
Cookies and local storage can affect what a page renders. Use a fresh browser context for tasks that must not share that state. Puppeteer explicitly documents that contexts isolate cookies and local storage, and that closing a context closes its pages. Playwright’s Page API example also shows the browser, context, and page lifecycle; consult the current API documentation for the behavior and options you need.
Isolation has an operational trade-off: more separate contexts can make jobs independent, but the documentation cited here does not establish their resource cost or a universally appropriate reuse policy. Decide whether each URL should share state, use a fresh context, or run in a separate worker, then measure the consequences.

Make screenshots visually repeatable
A screenshot is the rendered result of more than a URL. Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance identifies host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as sources of output variation. For comparisons or regression checks, use the same environment that generated the baseline.
- Pin the browser/runtime version and operating-system image used by workers.
- Keep viewport and relevant browser settings consistent.
- Use the same fonts and installed dependencies across workers.
- Compare results in the environment where the baseline was created, and benchmark representative pages before scaling out.
See Playwright visual comparisons for the documented sources of rendering variability and its consistency guidance.

Capture with Puppeteer
This runnable Node.js example reads URLs from a text file, uses a fixed number of workers, reuses one browser process, and writes one PNG per input line. Install Puppeteer with npm install puppeteer, save the code as capture-puppeteer.js, and put one URL per line in urls.txt. Run it with node capture-puppeteer.js.
const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
const urls = (await fs.readFile('urls.txt', 'utf8'))
.split(/r?n/)
.map((url) => url.trim())
.filter(Boolean);
const concurrency = 4; // Starting point only; tune for your workload.
const timeoutMs = 30_000;
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
let next = 0;
async function worker() {
while (true) {
const index = next++;
if (index >= urls.length) return;
const url = urls[index];
const started = Date.now();
let page;
try {
page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto(url, {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: timeoutMs,
});
await page.screenshot({
path: `screenshots/${String(index).padStart(6, '0')}.png`,
fullPage: true,
});
console.log(JSON.stringify({
index, url, finalUrl: page.url(), status: 'ok',
elapsedMs: Date.now() - started,
}));
} catch (error) {
console.error(JSON.stringify({
index, url, status: 'error', reason: error.message,
elapsedMs: Date.now() - started,
}));
} finally {
if (page) await page.close().catch(() => {});
}
}
}
try {
await fs.mkdir('screenshots', { recursive: true });
await Promise.all(
Array.from({ length: Math.min(concurrency, urls.length) }, () => worker()),
);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The example uses networkidle2 as a navigation condition; pages with persistent network activity may not satisfy a network-idle condition reliably. Adjust the wait strategy to the sites and content you need, and consider a selector or a deliberate delay where that is more appropriate. The concurrency value is deliberately a starting point, not a recommended universal limit. For stronger state separation, create and close a fresh context per job rather than using pages from the browser’s default context.

await Promise.all(
Array.from({ length: Math.min(concurrency, urls.length) }, () => worker()),
);
} finally {

}
Playwright’s example uses a fresh context for each URL, so cookies and local storage do not carry over between those jobs. Its networkidle wait condition may not suit pages with persistent network activity; select a wait condition that reflects when the screenshot is ready. To use Firefox or WebKit instead, consult the current Playwright installation and browser documentation; available engines and versions can change.

Common failures and practical fixes
- Navigation times out: the page may be slow or never reach the chosen wait condition. Set a deliberate timeout, choose a wait condition appropriate to the site, and record the timeout instead of treating it as a successful capture.
- Some pages are blank or incomplete: navigation completion does not necessarily mean the content you care about is visible. Wait for a relevant selector or a specific application state where possible; confirm the final URL and inspect representative outputs.
- Memory use or worker stability worsens as the batch runs: check that pages or contexts are closed in a
finallypath, keep concurrency bounded, and observe resource use on your deployment image. - Results differ from the baseline: compare operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, fonts, and headless mode; Playwright documents these as possible sources of visual variation.
- Cookies or local storage leak between jobs: use isolated contexts for jobs that need independent state. Puppeteer documents context-level isolation and page closure when a context is closed.
- Retries create duplicate work: record the failure reason and define which failures are retryable, how many attempts are allowed, and how outputs are named so a retry does not silently overwrite a valid result.
Or skip the browser setup
For a managed screenshot API instead of running browser workers, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of a page; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
