In Puppeteer, page.mouse.move(x, y, options?) moves the mouse to a coordinate. Its only documented move-specific option is steps, which sets how many movements are made from the current position to the destination; it defaults to 1.
What does steps do in Puppeteer?
steps is the number of movements made between the mouse’s current position and the destination coordinate. It is not a duration or delay. The API reference does not specify timing, easing, randomness, or a human-like path.
The method signature is:
page.mouse.move(x, y, options?)x and y are numeric coordinates. The optional options argument is a Readonly<MouseMoveOptions>, and the method returns a Promise<void>. The current Puppeteer API reference, version 25.12.0, documents steps?: number as the sole property of MouseMoveOptions; its default is 1. See the Mouse.move() method and MouseMoveOptions interface.
Default and explicit values
await page.mouse.move(250, 150); // steps defaults to 1
await page.mouse.move(500, 300, { steps: 10 });The first call omits options and uses the documented default. The second requests ten movements from the current mouse position to (500, 300). The option sets a count; it does not itself introduce a wait between movements.

What coordinates does page.mouse.move() use?
Puppeteer’s Mouse uses main-frame CSS pixels measured from the viewport’s top-left corner. These are not screen coordinates or document-page coordinates. The destination is a point in the viewport, not a selector.
For example, await page.mouse.move(250, 150) targets the position 250 CSS pixels from the viewport’s left edge and 150 CSS pixels from its top edge. See Puppeteer’s Mouse class reference.

What steps does not guarantee
Puppeteer describes its mouse events as synthetic and cautions that they do not fully replicate normal mouse functionality. Increasing steps requests more movements, but the API reference does not say that this makes the input human-like or physically reproduces a user’s mouse movement. Avoid relying on it for an unstated timing or trajectory guarantee.
Common mistakes and troubleshooting
- Passing a selector instead of coordinates:
mouse.move()takes numericxandyvalues. To move to an element’s position, first obtain its bounding box and use coordinates within the viewport. - Using page or screen coordinates: the documented coordinate basis is main-frame CSS pixels from the viewport’s top-left. Recalculate positions if the viewport or page layout changes.
- Expecting a delay from more steps:
stepssets a movement count, not a duration. The reference does not define timing; use a separate wait if your workflow needs one. - Expecting physical mouse behavior: the events are synthetic and do not fully reproduce normal mouse functionality. A particular interaction may require a different approach, and the reference does not promise that increasing steps resolves such limitations.
