Use page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) to capture the whole page, but do not treat that option—or network-idle navigation—as proof that lazy-loaded SVGs are ready. First identify how the page loads its graphics, trigger any viewport-based loading by scrolling, wait for a condition tied to the actual SVG or component, and then take the screenshot.
Why a full-page screenshot can still miss SVGs
Puppeteer’s fullPage: true controls the screenshot’s extent. It does not guarantee that below-the-fold content has been requested, inserted into the DOM, or rendered. Puppeteer documents full-page capture separately from network-idle waiting; network quiet is a statement about network activity, not a universal signal that a page is visually complete. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide and network-idle API.
Lazy loading may begin only when content approaches the viewport. MDN notes that lazy-loaded media can remain unloaded when the page’s load event fires, and that scrolling is a common trigger. A historical Puppeteer issue #3202 described missing lower-page content despite network-idle navigation and a two-second delay. It concerned Puppeteer 1.7.0 and lazy-loaded images and an iframe, so it illustrates a timing problem; it does not establish current behavior for SVGs.
Identify how the page implements its SVGs
There is no single readiness check that works for every SVG. Inspect the page’s markup and loading code in DevTools, or evaluate the DOM from Puppeteer, before choosing what to wait for.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Inline SVG: The graphic is an
<svg>element in the document. Check for the expected SVG and, if the app inserts or updates it asynchronously, for the application-specific state that means it is complete. - External image: The SVG may be loaded through an
<img>element. In that case, the element’scompleteproperty can help establish image loading status. It does not prove that the page’s intended graphic was selected or that every other resource is ready. - JavaScript-inserted or component-managed SVG: A script, observer, or framework may create or replace the graphic. Wait for the relevant component or application state, rather than assuming the presence of any
<svg>proves the intended content is ready.
MDN describes native lazy loading for linked resources on elements such as img and iframe, as well as the general behavior of lazy loading. The precise SVG mechanism depends on the target page; the MDN lazy-loading guide does not define a universal SVG-ready API.
Capture the page in five steps
- Navigate using a suitable initial condition.
networkidle2is a reasonable starting point for many pages, not a guarantee that content triggered by scrolling has loaded. - Inspect the SVG implementation. Determine whether the graphic is inline, an image resource, or content inserted by page JavaScript. Identify the selector or app state that indicates the intended graphic is ready.
- Trigger lazy loading if needed. For a page that loads content near the viewport, scroll through the relevant area. Scrolling alone is not proof of readiness: confirm that the target page’s loader actually responds to it.
- Wait for a specific condition. Use a selector, image completion check, observed response, or application-provided rendered state appropriate to the page. Prefer this over relying on an arbitrary sleep.
- Capture the full page. Take the screenshot only after the relevant readiness condition has passed.
Runnable Puppeteer example
This Node.js example shows the sequence. Replace the URL, SVG selector, and readiness predicate with ones verified for the target page. The scroll pause and step size are illustrative, not tested values or guarantees for every lazy loader.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 60_000,
});
// Trigger loaders that respond when content approaches the viewport.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(200, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8));
const height = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
for (let y = 0; y < height; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 100));
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
// Replace this with a predicate that proves the desired SVG is ready.
await page.waitForFunction(() => {
const svg = document.querySelector('svg.your-ready-selector');
return Boolean(svg);
}, { timeout: 30_000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The sample predicate checks only that a matching SVG exists. If the site inserts a shell before drawing the graphic, strengthen the condition—for example, check for a known child element, a non-empty path, or a page-specific rendered marker. Do not use an img.complete check unless inspection confirms that the relevant SVG is represented by an image element.
Choose a readiness check that matches the page
- For an image element: Wait for the expected image element and verify its
completestate. If successful loading matters, also check the condition appropriate to that image, such as its natural dimensions; a completed request alone need not mean the intended image loaded successfully. - For inline SVG: Wait for the expected inline element and a meaningful child or application state. A selector that matches an empty SVG shell may pass too early.
- For an observer or app loader: Trigger the loader as the page expects, then wait for its resulting DOM or app state. If available, an observed resource response can help diagnose whether the asset was requested, but a response alone does not prove the page rendered it.
- For a page with no known signal: Inspect the DOM and loader behavior first. A longer fixed delay may appear to help, but it is less diagnostic and cannot ensure a viewport trigger occurred.
Trade-offs and side effects of scrolling
Scrolling can activate the lazy loader, but it can also trigger sticky navigation, animations, or infinite-scroll behavior. The effect depends on the page. Review the capture after scrolling and adjust the approach if the page changes its layout or continues adding content. A specific readiness condition is easier to diagnose than assuming a delay worked, though its reliability depends on whether it represents the graphic you actually need.
Troubleshooting missing SVGs
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The SVG is missing below the fold. | The page has not triggered viewport-based loading. | Inspect the loader, scroll through the relevant area, then wait for the expected graphic or component state. |
networkidle2 passes, but the graphic is absent. |
Network idleness did not trigger the loader or establish render readiness. | Use scrolling or the page’s actual trigger, followed by a page-specific readiness check. |
A wait for img.complete never passes or appears irrelevant. |
The SVG may be inline or created by JavaScript rather than represented by an image element. | Inspect the DOM and use an SVG- or component-specific predicate instead. |
| The selector wait passes, but the captured SVG is empty or incomplete. | The selector matches a container or SVG shell before drawing finishes. | Wait for a meaningful child, loaded state, or application marker; confirm the predicate against the rendered DOM. |
| A fixed delay works inconsistently. | The trigger or rendering time varies, and elapsed time does not show which stage completed. | Replace the delay with an observable condition. Keep a timeout so a missing condition fails visibly rather than hanging indefinitely. |
| The page keeps growing or its layout shifts after scrolling. | Scrolling may trigger infinite scroll, sticky elements, or animations. | Inspect the page behavior, limit scrolling to the needed content, and verify the final capture. |
