First find out whether the page itself is wider than its viewport or whether the missing content lives inside a separate scrolling element. Compare a viewport screenshot with a full-page screenshot, inspect the document’s width and overflow, then capture the document, a defined rectangle, or a specific element as appropriate. There is no single reliable fix without the page, capture options, and Puppeteer and Chrome versions.
Identify what is being clipped
Take both screenshots from the same page state. If the normal viewport capture and the full-page capture end at the same horizontal position, investigate the page layout or configured viewport. If the viewport image looks right but the full-page result differs, investigate full-page geometry and CSS that depends on viewport dimensions.
page.viewport() returns Puppeteer’s configured viewport settings; the API documentation cautions that it does not check the actual page viewport. Treat it as one diagnostic input, not proof of the dimensions Chrome is using. See the Page.viewport() reference.
Inspect document width and overflow
Measure the document from the page and compare its client width with its scroll width. These DOM measurements are diagnostic checks, not guarantees about how Puppeteer will render a screenshot.

const geometry = await page.evaluate(() => {
const root = document.documentElement;
return {
clientWidth: root.clientWidth,
scrollWidth: root.scrollWidth,
innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
innerHeight: window.innerHeight,
};
});
console.log(geometry);
const wideElements = await page.evaluate(() => {
const viewportWidth = document.documentElement.clientWidth;
return [...document.querySelectorAll('body *')]
.map((el) => {
const rect = el.getBoundingClientRect();
return {
tag: el.tagName,
id: el.id,
className: typeof el.className === 'string' ? el.className : '',
left: rect.left,
right: rect.right,
width: rect.width,
scrollWidth: el.scrollWidth,
clientWidth: el.clientWidth,
overflowX: getComputedStyle(el).overflowX,
};
})
.filter((el) => el.right > viewportWidth || el.left < 0 || el.scrollWidth > el.clientWidth);
});
console.table(wideElements);
If document.documentElement.scrollWidth exceeds clientWidth, inspect the elements extending beyond the document’s visible width. Decide whether those elements should wrap, be constrained, or remain intentionally wide. Also look for nested containers with overflow: auto or overflow: scroll: their scrollable content is separate from the document’s scrolling area.
Choose the capture method for the intended area
Puppeteer documents Page.screenshot() for screenshots. Use the option that matches what should appear in the output; the ScreenshotOptions reference describes fullPage, clip, and captureBeyondViewport.

| Method | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) |
You want the whole document. | It does not mean Puppeteer will scroll through every nested scrolling container. |
page.screenshot({ clip: { x, y, width, height } }) |
You want a known rectangle. | Set bounds for the intended output region and verify the result with your installed version. |
elementHandle.screenshot() |
You want one DOM element. | The guide says Puppeteer attempts to scroll a hidden element into view; that does not guarantee capture of every overflowing descendant or inner scroller. |
| Change the viewport or page CSS | Measurements show viewport width or layout overflow is the cause. | Changing either can alter responsive layout; viewport changes can also trigger page resize behavior. |
Capture the full document
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
The option requests a full-page capture. It does not resolve an overly wide layout or make a nested element’s independent scroll area part of the document.

Capture a rectangular region
await page.screenshot({
path: 'region.png',
clip: { x: 0, y: 0, width: 1200, height: 900 },
});
Replace the example dimensions with the rectangle you actually need. The reference documents captureBeyondViewport as false by default when no clip is set and true by default when a clip is set. Avoid adding or changing it without checking the installed Puppeteer version and the output you expect.

Capture an element
const el = await page.waitForSelector('.target-element');
if (!el) throw new Error('Target element was not found');
await el.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
Use a selector for the actual target. Element capture can bring a hidden element into view, according to Puppeteer’s Screenshots guide, but an internally scrolling element may still require a separate approach if you need all of its scrollable content.
Check viewport-relative CSS
Styles using vw or vh can make layout depend on viewport dimensions. Compare the element’s computed size and the page layout before and after full-page capture if the screenshot’s width changes unexpectedly. A historical Puppeteer report described a full-page capture width affecting viewport-relative CSS, with a comment proposing that the viewport width be retained. That issue was opened in 2017; it is a reproduction clue, not current official guidance or a universal bug. Confirm that your current Puppeteer and Chrome versions reproduce it before changing strategy: Puppeteer issue #703.

Handle nested scrollers and very large pages
Content inside a separate scrolling region
A page-wide full-page screenshot should not be assumed to traverse an element’s independent scroll area. If the missing content is inside a nested scroller, scroll that container itself or capture the container using a process suited to its content. A historical Puppeteer report documents a central scrolling region whose contents were omitted from a document-wide capture: Puppeteer issue #746.

Unusually tall output
Large screenshot failures and viewport-resizing workarounds were reported for Puppeteer 2.0.0 with Chromium 79. The report is version-specific; its approximate pixel estimate is not a current Chrome limit. Resizing the viewport may also fire a page resize event and change layout. Check your own installed versions and test the page after any resize: Puppeteer issue #5300.

Version history can matter even when the code is unchanged. Puppeteer’s changelog records a fix in 22.12.1, dated 2024-06-26, to reset the viewport after a full-page screenshot when defaultViewport is null. Consult the Puppeteer changelog when diagnosing version-dependent behavior.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- Both captures clip at the same edge: check the configured viewport, document width, wide elements, and horizontal overflow. Correct the page’s layout if the width is unintended.
- Only the full-page capture differs: compare viewport-relative CSS and capture settings; reproduce with the exact Puppeteer and Chrome versions in use.
- The missing area is inside a scrollable panel: inspect and scroll that panel rather than assuming
fullPageincludes its entire inner scroll area. - An element screenshot omits content: distinguish the element’s own bounds from overflowing descendants or nested scrollers; element capture’s scroll-into-view behavior is not a promise to expand its contents.
- A very tall capture fails or changes layout: test a smaller target and check for resize-sensitive page behavior. Do not apply an old pixel threshold or workaround as a current browser limit.
- The behavior changed after upgrading: record the Puppeteer and Chrome versions, viewport settings, and screenshot options, then compare with the changelog and test a minimal reproduction.
When the cause remains unclear, reduce the case to a page that reproduces the clipping and record the Puppeteer and Chrome versions, configured viewport, document client and scroll widths, target element bounds, and screenshot options. Without those details, one exact code change cannot be established.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without managing a Puppeteer browser, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API. Its one-call cURL example is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
