Use the first for data you want to consume in Node.js, and the second when you need to keep or reuse a page-side object. Both methods wait for promises returned by the function. This comparison follows Puppeteer API documentation version 25.12.0; check the documentation matching your installed version because API signatures can change.
How the two methods differ
Both methods run a function in the page context. The difference is what Puppeteer returns to your Node.js code:
| If you need… | Use | Returned result |
|---|---|---|
| A title, number, string, boolean, or object data for Node.js | page.evaluate() |
The function result as a value |
| A reference to a page-side object for further inspection or use in another page function | page.evaluateHandle() |
A JSHandle, or an ElementHandle if the result is an element |
In the API signatures, evaluate() resolves to Promise<Awaited<ReturnType<Func>>>, while evaluateHandle() resolves to Promise<HandleFor<Awaited<ReturnType<Func>>>>. The Puppeteer documentation describes the practical distinction this way: “The only difference between page.evaluate and page.evaluateHandle is that evaluateHandle will return the value wrapped in an in-page object.” Puppeteer API documentation.
Use evaluate() for data you need in Node.js
Return the specific data you want to use outside the browser context. Puppeteer resolves the function result as a value:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
const title = await page.evaluate(() => document.title);
console.log(title); // A string available to Node.js
This is usually the simpler choice for extracting text, counts, booleans, or plain data structures. You do not need to manage a handle when all you want is the returned value.
Use evaluateHandle() to retain a page-side object
Choose evaluateHandle() when you want to keep a reference to an object in the page and pass it to another evaluation. For example, obtain the body handle, read its HTML in a later evaluation, then release the handle:

const bodyHandle = await page.evaluateHandle(() => document.body);
const html = await page.evaluate(body => body.innerHTML, bodyHandle);
await bodyHandle.dispose();
Puppeteer supports passing handles as arguments to evaluation functions. The handle is not itself a plain Node.js object; it refers to the object in the page context.
When the result is a DOM element
If the function passed to evaluateHandle() returns an element, Puppeteer returns an ElementHandle, which supports element operations such as click(). The following TypeScript example uses the generic type shown in Puppeteer’s API documentation:

const button = await page.evaluateHandle<ElementHandle>(() =>
document.querySelector('button'),
);
await button.click();
For ordinary element lookup, a selector API or locator may express the task more directly. evaluateHandle() is useful when the value comes from a page-side function or when you specifically need its handle.
Promises, serialization, and cleanup
Both methods wait for returned promises
If the function returns a promise, Puppeteer waits for it to resolve before returning the result. Promise handling is not a reason to choose one method over the other.

Extracting serializable data from a handle
Call handle.jsonValue() when you need the serializable portions of the referenced object. It does not call the object’s toJSON() method and can throw if circular references prevent serialization. If the intended result is ordinary data, returning it directly with evaluate() may avoid managing a handle.
Disposing of handles
A JSHandle keeps its referenced object from being garbage-collected while the handle remains active. Call dispose() when you have finished with it and want to release it sooner. Puppeteer also automatically disposes handles when their associated frame navigates away or the parent context is destroyed. See the JSHandle API documentation and the jsonValue() API documentation.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Expecting a handle to be plain data:
evaluateHandle()returns a reference wrapper. UsejsonValue()for serializable portions, or useevaluate()when you just need the value. - Keeping handles longer than needed: call
dispose()after the last operation using the handle. - Choosing based on promise support: both methods await a returned promise. Choose based on whether the result should be a value or a retained page-side reference.
- Using a handle for a routine selector lookup: consider a selector API or locator when it describes the operation more clearly.
- Assuming all objects serialize: circular structures can make
jsonValue()throw. Return only the data needed, or handle serialization failures explicitly.

If your goal is simply to capture a website rather than inspect its page objects, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its request parameters are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs.
