To emulate a named phone or tablet in Puppeteer, create a page, call page.emulate(KnownDevices['device name']), then navigate. For a custom setup, use page.setViewport() when you only need to change page dimensions, or pass a Device object to page.emulate() when you also need a user agent. Configure the page before navigation: emulation resizes it, and changing certain viewport settings can reload a page.
Emulate a named device
Puppeteer’s KnownDevices is a read-only catalog of named profiles. Each profile supplies a user-agent string and viewport settings; page.emulate() applies both as a shortcut for setting the page’s user agent and viewport. The official references surfaced different Puppeteer versions: the KnownDevices reference reports 25.12.0, while the Page.emulate reference reports 25.11.0. Check the documentation matching your installed version if a device name or API is unavailable.
Runnable example
In a project with Puppeteer installed, save this as an ES module, for example device.mjs, and run node device.mjs:

Set a custom viewport or device profile
Change only the viewport
Use page.setViewport() if you need a particular page width and height but do not need a device-specific user agent. Set it before navigation:

Set both a custom user agent and viewport
A device profile is a Device object with userAgent and viewport properties. Construct one when a named preset does not fit your test, then pass it to page.emulate():

Choose the right configuration method

These methods do not establish that a page behaves exactly as it would on a physical handset. The documented emulation applies user-agent and viewport/device metrics; it is not a guarantee of complete physical-device fidelity.
Keep page emulation separate from browser screens
page.emulate() and page.setViewport() affect a page. Puppeteer’s screen configuration concerns the headless browser’s screen layout. The screen configuration guide documents --screen-info and the browser methods Browser.addScreen() and Browser.removeScreen() for headless use; Browser.screens() is available in both headful and headless modes. Without --screen-info or --window-size, the guide says the headless screen defaults to 800×600. Use browser screen configuration for multi-screen layout scenarios, not as a substitute for emulating a mobile page.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The device key is undefined: Confirm the spelling and capitalization, then check that key in
KnownDevicesfor your installed Puppeteer version. The published API references surface different versions, so the newest online example may not match your installation. - The page appears desktop-sized: Apply
page.emulate()orpage.setViewport()to the page you navigate, and do so beforepage.goto(). A browser screen setting does not replace page emulation. - The page reloads after a viewport change: This can happen when changing
isMobileorhasTouch. Configure the viewport before navigation where possible. - The mobile page does not match a real phone: The documented profile configures a user agent and viewport/device metrics; it does not promise that every hardware or operating-system behavior is reproduced.
- A screen option or method is unavailable: Verify the Puppeteer version and whether the feature is headless-only. Use the matching screen configuration guide for browser-level options.
