The documented constructor is new DefaultProvider(baseUrl): it takes a download-host URL, not a general options object. For the usual install flow, configure browser, build, platform, cache, and provider selection through install({ ... }). Use a custom provider only when you need a different browser distribution or download source.
What the DefaultProvider constructor accepts
Puppeteer describes DefaultProvider as its standard BrowserProvider implementation. Its documented constructor signature is new DefaultProvider(baseUrl); baseUrl is the download host. The constructor reference does not list additional constructor options or describe a general options-object parameter. See the DefaultProvider API reference.
The class also exposes getDownloadUrl(options), getExecutablePath(options), getName(), and supports(options). Those are provider methods, not extra constructor arguments.
When to use the default provider or a custom one
| Approach | Use it when | Compatibility and work |
|---|---|---|
| Default provider | The standard Puppeteer browser binaries and download source meet your needs. | Puppeteer tests and guarantees compatibility with its default binaries; setup is simpler. |
| Custom provider | You must fetch a browser from a mirror, private host, or other distribution. | You implement URL, support, and executable-path behavior, then validate the distribution and maintain compatibility yourself. |
Puppeteer explicitly says custom providers are not officially supported. Its custom provider example is an interface pattern, not a guarantee that an arbitrary browser archive will work. Match the actual browser, build, platform, archive layout, and executable path.

Install-time settings belong in install()
Provider selection and browser download settings are install-time concerns. The InstallOptions reference lists the following settings; confirm the reference for the version installed in your project, since the cited DefaultProvider API page displayed version 25.5.0 and the InstallOptions page displayed version 25.12.0.
browser: browser to install.buildId: browser build identifier. Puppeteer says it should uniquely identify binaries and is used for caching.cacheDir: directory where downloaded browsers are stored.baseUrl: optional download-host override. The listed defaults are Chrome for Testing storage for Chrome and Mozilla’s Firefox nightly archive for Firefox.platform: target platform; auto-detected if omitted.providers: providers tried in order. Puppeteer automatically adds the default provider as fallback.expectedHash: optional SHA-256 archive verification. If omitted, the download proceeds without integrity verification.installDeps: optional system dependency installation. It defaults tofalseand is supported only for Chrome on Debian or Ubuntu; usingapt-getrequires system privileges.unpack: whether to unpack the archive; defaults totrue.downloadProgressCallbackandlogger: progress and logging controls.
For exact types and version-specific behavior, consult the InstallOptions API reference.

Set up a custom provider
The official example creates a provider instance and supplies it to install({ providers: [...] }) along with the browser, build ID, platform, and cache directory. The following is a shape to adapt, not a drop-in implementation: the provider methods must return paths and URLs that match your distribution and archive layout.
import { install } from '@puppeteer/browsers';
class MirrorProvider {
constructor(baseUrl) {
this.baseUrl = baseUrl;
}
supports(options) {
// Return true only for browser/build/platform combinations
// that this mirror actually serves.
return options.browser === 'chrome';
}
getDownloadUrl(options) {
// Construct the real archive URL for this build and platform.
// Replace this illustrative mapping with your mirror's layout.
return `${this.baseUrl}/${options.buildId}/archive.zip`;
}
getExecutablePath(options) {
// Return the executable path after extraction, matching the
// real archive's directory and executable names.
return `/your/cache/path/${options.buildId}/chrome`;
}
getName() {
return 'mirror';
}
}
const provider = new MirrorProvider('https://mirror.example.com');
await install({
browser: 'chrome',
buildId: 'YOUR_BUILD_ID',
cacheDir: './.cache/browsers',
// Set platform explicitly when targeting a different platform.
providers: [provider],
});
The host, archive URL, build ID, and executable path above are illustrative and must be replaced with values valid for your distribution. The documented provider pattern and install call are shown in Puppeteer’s browsers package example. Because the default provider is a fallback, order custom providers intentionally and ensure unsupported combinations return the appropriate result according to the interface contract.

Keep download setup separate from browser launch
install() determines which browser binary is fetched and cached. Launch options configure the browser process after a usable binary exists. The launch reference includes browser, channel, executablePath, args, headless, userDataDir, and timeout; executablePath selects a local executable rather than changing where installation downloads from. Puppeteer cautions that its compatibility guarantee applies to the bundled browser. See LaunchOptions.
Puppeteer downloads a specific Chrome version by default so its API works with that browser version. Configuration files provide defaults, and applicable environment variables override them. Configuration files and environment variables are ignored by puppeteer-core. If you change browser-download configuration, follow the configuration guide’s instructions to rerun browser installation or the relevant postinstall step: Puppeteer configuration.

Verify the provider before relying on it
- Check that the browser, build ID, and platform you pass to
install()are served by the intended provider. - Confirm the provider returns a reachable archive URL and that the archive’s internal paths match the executable path it reports.
- Use
expectedHashwhen you have a trusted SHA-256 value and want archive integrity verification; without it, installation does not verify the archive hash. - After installation, launch the resulting executable in the target environment and exercise the Puppeteer features your application requires.
- Keep the installed package version and its matching API documentation together when reviewing version-sensitive behavior.
Troubleshooting provider setup
- The constructor rejects an options object: the documented constructor takes
baseUrl, not a general options object. Put browser/build/cache/provider choices ininstall(). - Install cannot find or download the archive: check the provider order, build ID, platform, and URL generated by
getDownloadUrl(). Verify that the mirror serves that exact file. - Installation succeeds but launch fails: the executable path or archive layout may not match the distribution, or the binary may be incompatible with the requested build or environment. Validate the extracted path and test the binary directly.
- A custom provider is never selected: verify that its support check matches the requested browser/build/platform and that it appears in the
providersarray in the intended order. The default provider remains the fallback. - Changing configuration does not change the downloaded browser: configuration and postinstall behavior may differ by package or install method. Check the configuration guide and rerun the browser installation step it specifies; note that
puppeteer-coreignores Puppeteer configuration files and environment variables. - Browser launch works locally but fails on the deployment host: test the same platform and required system dependencies there. The documented
installDepssupport is limited to Chrome on Debian or Ubuntu and requires privileges forapt-get.
