Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most users, the easiest way to use Puppeteer’s browser-management CLI is to run npx @puppeteer/browsers --help and then use its shell commands. Instantiate the exported CLI class directly only when embedding or customizing the CLI in JavaScript or TypeScript. The examples below explain both paths and distinguish the public CLI constructor from InstalledBrowser, whose constructor Puppeteer marks as internal.
Use the CLI from a shell
Start with the package’s help output, then ask for help on a specific command to see options available in the version you are running:
npx @puppeteer/browsers --help
npx @puppeteer/browsers install --help
npx @puppeteer/browsers launch --help
npx @puppeteer/browsers list --help
npx @puppeteer/browsers clear --help
If the package is installed in the current project, npx runs that installed copy; otherwise, it installs and runs the package. To use a particular package release, pin it in the command, for example npx @puppeteer/browsers@2.4.1 --help. You can also request the latest release explicitly, but a pinned version makes the invoked package release clear.
Install, list, and clear browser downloads
Puppeteer documents these example commands:
npx @puppeteer/browsers install chrome@stable
npx @puppeteer/browsers install chrome@117
npx @puppeteer/browsers install chromedriver@canary
npx @puppeteer/browsers list
npx @puppeteer/browsers clear
Browser identifiers and build IDs are browser-specific. You can select a release channel or specify a version, milestone, or other build ID supported for that browser. Treat examples such as chrome@117 as illustrations, not guarantees that the same build will remain available. Check current command help and select a build intentionally. See the Puppeteer browsers documentation.

Install Chrome dependencies on Ubuntu or Debian
For Chrome on Ubuntu or Debian, Puppeteer documents this command to install Chrome and its required system dependencies:
npx puppeteer browsers install chrome --install-deps
This option is documented for Chrome on Ubuntu/Debian, not as a general cross-platform dependency installer, and it requires root privileges. Use it only in the supported environment.

Instantiate the public CLI class
The public constructor accepts either a cache-path string or an options object as its first argument, plus an optional readline.Interface as the second argument. The object form is useful when embedding the CLI and setting its defaults:
import {CLI} from '@puppeteer/browsers';
const cli = new CLI({
cachePath: '/tmp/browser-cache',
scriptName: 'my-browser-tool',
});
The string shorthand sets the cache path:
import {CLI} from '@puppeteer/browsers';
const cli = new CLI('/tmp/browser-cache');
These snippets illustrate the documented constructor signature; they are not a claim that a particular release was runtime-tested. Use the exported API and the types in the exact installed release, since the implementation on the rolling source branch can change.

Optional readline interface. |
When to use a cache path or pinned browser
Choose the cache path based on where the downloaded browsers should live: the constructor defaults to the current working directory, while Puppeteer’s documented browser-download configuration uses ~/.cache/puppeteer starting with v19.0.0. The standalone constructor’s default and Puppeteer’s configured download location are different contexts; don’t assume changing one changes the other.
The pinnedBrowsers option is for defining browser builds and skip-download behavior in a CLI workflow. For ordinary browser selection, the shell command’s browser-specific channel or build ID is often simpler. A channel such as stable tracks a release channel; a specific build ID expresses a fixed selection, subject to availability. Consult the relevant command help and package types for the installed release.

Choose the standalone CLI or Puppeteer’s wrapper
npx @puppeteer/browsers runs the standalone browser-management package. Puppeteer also documents a puppeteer browsers wrapper for browser installation tasks, such as the Ubuntu/Debian Chrome dependency command above. Which command applies depends on whether you are using the standalone package or a Puppeteer installation and on the specific browser and platform; the commands are not interchangeable in every environment.
For browser downloads managed through Puppeteer, the configuration guide supports configuration files and applicable environment variables, with environment variables taking precedence. Proxy settings are environment-only: HTTP_PROXY, HTTPS_PROXY, and NO_PROXY. Proxy downloads require the optional proxy-agent peer dependency. Puppeteer configuration files and environment variables are ignored by puppeteer-core. If you change browser download options in configuration, rerun the install step:

npx puppeteer browsers install
See Puppeteer’s configuration guide for supported configuration file locations and formats.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the browser compatible with Puppeteer
Browser compatibility depends on the Puppeteer release. Puppeteer’s support guidance says v20.0.0 and later use Chrome for Testing, while v23.0.0 and later download and work with stable Firefox. Use the version mapping table on the supported browsers page for the release you have; if an exact Puppeteer version is absent, the page says to use the supported browser version for the immediately prior Puppeteer version listed. The mapping can change, so don’t treat a version example from an older guide as a current compatibility guarantee.
Do not construct InstalledBrowser directly
CLI is the class to consider when your code needs to embed or customize the command-line interface. InstalledBrowser represents an installed browser, but its API documentation marks the constructor internal and says: “Third-party code should not call the constructor directly or create subclasses that extend the InstalledBrowser class.” Use supported exported APIs instead of instantiating that class yourself. See the browsers API documentation.
Common setup problems
- The command uses an unexpected package version:
npxuses the project’s installed copy when present. Check the installed dependency and pin the version in the invocation when you need a specific release. - A browser build cannot be installed: build identifiers are browser-specific and availability can change. Confirm the identifier and current options with
install --help, and choose a supported channel or build ID. - System dependency installation fails:
--install-depsis documented for Chrome on Ubuntu/Debian and requires root privileges. Verify the operating system, browser, and privileges rather than treating the flag as a general installer. - A configured download path or proxy has no effect: ensure you are using Puppeteer rather than
puppeteer-coreif relying on Puppeteer configuration. Proxy variables are environment-only, and proxy downloads need the optionalproxy-agentpeer dependency. Rerunnpx puppeteer browsers installafter changing download configuration. - The installed browser does not match expectations: check the supported-browser mapping for the Puppeteer version in use, especially when choosing a specific browser build rather than a channel.
- Constructor code stops compiling after an upgrade: check the types exported by the exact installed
@puppeteer/browsersrelease; the source on the main branch is not a substitute for that release’s API.
