Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To remove every browser binary downloaded and managed in Puppeteer’s browser cache, first inspect it with npx @puppeteer/browsers list, then run npx @puppeteer/browsers clear. That clears cached browser downloads; it does not uninstall Puppeteer from your project or remove Chrome installed separately through your operating system.
Choose the right kind of uninstall
Puppeteer’s package, its downloaded browser binaries, and a system-installed Chrome or Chromium browser are separate things. The right cleanup depends on which one you want to remove.
| Goal | What to do | Scope and caution |
|---|---|---|
| See Puppeteer-managed browser downloads | npx @puppeteer/browsers list |
Lists browsers in the cache used by the CLI. Check that you are looking at the intended cache. |
| Clear all browsers in that cache | npx @puppeteer/browsers clear |
Removes installed browsers managed in the cache, not the Puppeteer package or a system browser. |
| Remove older cached Chrome and Firefox binaries | Call PuppeteerNode.trimCache() |
Removes non-current binaries from the configured cache, but does not check whether another Puppeteer installation sharing that cache needs them. |
| Uninstall Puppeteer from a project | Use the project’s package manager | Dependency removal is separate from clearing downloaded browser binaries. |
| Uninstall system Chrome or Chromium | Use the operating system’s application or package uninstall flow | Puppeteer’s browser-cache commands do not remove a separately installed browser. |
Find and inspect the browser cache
Puppeteer’s default cache directory is ~/.cache/puppeteer starting with Puppeteer v19.0.0. Configuration or the PUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR environment variable can change it. See the official configuration guide and next-version configuration guide for the relevant release’s settings.
- Check your project or environment for a configured
cacheDirectoryorPUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR. Installation and runtime should use the same intended cache location. - List the installed browsers:
npx @puppeteer/browsers list. The @puppeteer/browsers CLI documentation describes the list and clear commands. - If the listed browsers are the ones you intend to remove, choose a full clear or selective cleanup below.
Clear all Puppeteer-managed browser downloads
Run this from a shell in an environment where npx can invoke @puppeteer/browsers:

npx @puppeteer/browsers clear
This removes all installed browsers managed in that CLI cache. It does not remove Puppeteer from package.json, and it does not uninstall a system Chrome or Chromium installation. If the command appears to have no effect, check whether you are invoking it in the same environment and cache context used to install the browsers.
Remove only non-current cached browsers
PuppeteerNode exposes trimCache() to remove non-current Chrome and Firefox binaries from the configured cache. Use it only when its broader cache effect is acceptable: it does not determine whether another Puppeteer version sharing that cache still depends on one of those binaries. The trimCache API reference documents this operation. For options specific to uninstall(options), consult the API reference for your installed release; the documented excerpt does not establish version-independent option fields.

Stop Puppeteer downloading browsers during installation
To prevent future automatic browser downloads, set the skipDownload configuration option or the PUPPETEER_SKIP_DOWNLOAD environment variable. The setting controls installation behavior; changing it does not itself remove binaries already in the cache. After changing download configuration, rerun the browser-install command as directed by the configuration guide or next-version guide, matching the documentation to your Puppeteer release.
What disk space to expect
Puppeteer’s installation guide describes its default installation as downloading Chrome for Testing and chrome-headless-shell. It gives approximate download sizes of ~170MB on macOS, ~282MB on Linux, and ~280MB on Windows. These are download estimates, not measured post-install disk usage. See the installation guide for the documentation version and context.

Common cleanup problems
- The browser still appears after clearing: You may be checking a different cache from the one the command used. Verify
cacheDirectoryandPUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR, then list browsers from the matching environment. - A project fails after
trimCache(): Another Puppeteer version may have shared the cache and required a binary removed as non-current. Reinstall the browser required by that project, and avoid selective cleanup on shared caches unless you have confirmed their dependencies. - Chrome still launches after clearing: The running project may be using a system-installed Chrome/Chromium rather than a Puppeteer-managed download. Remove that browser through the operating system’s uninstall flow if that is your goal.
- Puppeteer downloads a browser again: Clearing is not a persistent download-prevention setting. Configure
skipDownloadorPUPPETEER_SKIP_DOWNLOADand rerun the browser-install command.
Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is to capture a website rather than manage a local Puppeteer browser, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the service handles the browser setup.
