Use Puppeteer’s userDataDir launch option to choose a browser user-data directory for a run. Use a BrowserContext to isolate cookies and local storage between tasks inside the same browser. They operate at different scopes: a directory is set when launching the browser; a context is created within it.

Which Puppeteer profile option should you use?

Need Use Scope and cleanup
Choose a user-data directory for the launched browser userDataDir in puppeteer.launch() Applies to the browser process. Close the browser when the run is complete.
Keep automation tasks’ cookies and local storage separate within one browser A separate BrowserContext for each task Applies within the browser. Close each context when finished.

These are not interchangeable names for the same kind of profile. Puppeteer’s LaunchOptions API defines userDataDir as a string path to a user-data directory. Its BrowserContext API describes storage isolation between contexts, including cookies and local storage.

Set a user-data directory with userDataDir

Pass a writable directory path when launching Puppeteer. The following Node.js example creates a persistent directory path for the browser launch; ensure the directory exists or can be created by your environment and is writable by the process.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
    userDataDir: './puppeteer-profile',
  });

  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com');
    console.log(await page.title());
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Choose a directory appropriate to your deployment. The official API documentation does not establish a platform-specific default path or provide a general recipe for reusing a person’s everyday Chrome profile, so do not assume a particular path or that an existing profile is safe to use. If separate browser processes run concurrently, use distinct directories unless you have verified that your specific browser setup supports sharing.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Isolate tasks with BrowserContext

Create a context for each task that should not share cookies or local storage with other tasks. Open pages from that context and close it when the task ends. The browser’s default context is available at startup; in Chrome, non-default contexts are incognito.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();

  try {
    const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
    try {
      const page = await context.newPage();
      await page.goto('https://example.com');
      console.log(await page.title());
    } finally {
      await context.close();
    }
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Closing a context closes its pages. This makes context-level separation useful for independent test cases that run under one browser process; it does not mean each context has a separate browser launch directory.

What args changes—and what it does not

The args launch option passes additional command-line arguments to the browser process. It is not a substitute for userDataDir or a BrowserContext. Puppeteer also permits changing or filtering its default arguments, but its API cautions that users probably want those defaults. Only alter them when a specific, demonstrated need calls for it.

Headless mode and browser executable

The current LaunchOptions API lists headless as defaulting to true. The value true uses the new headless mode; 'shell' selects the old headless shell. This affects launch behavior, not the difference between a user-data directory and context-level storage isolation.

Puppeteer warns that using a custom executablePath is at your own risk: its compatibility guarantee applies to the browser bundled with Puppeteer. Check the installed Puppeteer version and its documentation before relying on exact API details, because the API reference is current main-branch documentation rather than a version-pinned reference.

Troubleshoot profile and context problems

  • Browser cannot use the profile directory: Check that the path is valid in the runtime environment and writable by the process. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide says Chrome needs a writable user-data directory and gives /tmp/.puppeteer-profile as an example for environments requiring a writable temporary location. That example is not a universal default.
  • Cookies or local storage unexpectedly carry between tasks: Confirm that each task creates and uses its own context rather than opening pages in the default context. Close the task’s context when finished.
  • Another browser process is using the same directory: Do not assume concurrent processes can safely share one user-data directory. Use distinct directories unless you have verified your deployed browser setup.
  • A custom Chrome executable behaves differently: Puppeteer only guarantees compatibility with its bundled browser. Test the selected executable against the installed Puppeteer version.
  • A launch option appears unsupported: Check the API reference matching the installed Puppeteer version; the live API pages may describe a newer main-branch state.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is simply to capture a website rather than manage Puppeteer profile state, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; see the API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does userDataDir keep browser data between separate Puppeteer runs?

It selects the user-data directory for a browser launch. The exact persistence behavior depends on how your runs use that directory; verify it in your deployment rather than assuming a particular platform path or everyday Chrome profile setup.
