Puppeteer browser management comes down to who installs and owns the browser process. Use puppeteer when its downloaded, compatible browser fits your setup; use puppeteer-core when you provide a local browser or connect to one already running. Then choose separately whether each task needs its own BrowserContext and who should shut down the browser.
Choose how Puppeteer gets its browser
| Approach | Who manages the browser | Best fit | Setup point |
|---|---|---|---|
puppeteer with its downloaded browser |
Puppeteer’s installation workflow | You want the documented default and a compatible browser fetched during installation. | Package managers may block install scripts and skip the browser download. See the installation guide for the documented install options. |
puppeteer-core with a local browser |
Your workstation, deployment, or browser-management workflow | Your environment already controls browser installation or versioning. | Set executablePath or a supported channel, and check the browser compatibility mapping. |
puppeteer-core connected to an existing browser |
An external launcher or browser service | A separate process or environment starts the browser and exposes a WebSocket endpoint. | Call connect() with that endpoint; use disconnect() when Puppeteer should detach without stopping the process. |
Start with the full package for the default setup
The puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing as part of installation and supplies defaults. This is the straightforward choice when you do not need to own the browser installation separately.
Use puppeteer-core when your environment owns the browser
puppeteer-core does not download Chrome. For a locally installed browser, provide its executable path or choose a supported channel. The configuration guide describes executable configuration: Puppeteer configuration.
Use a remote connection when another process starts the browser
With puppeteer-core, you can attach to a browser that is already running. The external launcher or service owns that process; Puppeteer controls its session only until you disconnect or close it. You need the browser’s WebSocket endpoint.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Install or manage browser binaries
If an install completes but the browser is missing, the package manager may have blocked Puppeteer’s install script. Puppeteer’s documented remedy is to run its browser installer explicitly:
npx puppeteer browsers install
The @puppeteer/browsers tooling provides CLI and programmatic workflows for browser binaries. Its CLI includes install, list, launch, and clear operations; consult the @puppeteer/browsers API documentation for current commands and API details.
Use a self-managed local browser
Install the browser through your own deployment or workstation process, then point Puppeteer at it. For example, with puppeteer-core:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer-core');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
executablePath: '/path/to/chrome',
headless: true
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
console.log(await page.title());
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Replace /path/to/chrome with the executable available in your environment. Alternatively, configure a supported browser channel when that matches your installation. A path gives you explicit control over which executable is used; either way, verify it against the supported-browser mapping.

When an external process has started a browser and provides its WebSocket endpoint, attach with connect(). This runnable example disconnects after using the browser, leaving the externally managed process alive:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer-core');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.connect({
browserWSEndpoint: 'ws://127.0.0.1:9222/devtools/browser/REPLACE_WITH_ENDPOINT'
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
console.log(await page.title());
} finally {
await browser.disconnect();
}
})();
Use the actual WebSocket endpoint published by the browser launcher; the endpoint in this example is illustrative, not a universal address. Puppeteer’s browser-management guide covers connecting to and detaching from a browser: Browser management.

Keep browser lifetime separate from task isolation
A browser process can serve multiple tasks. A BrowserContext separates task state without starting a separate browser process: its cookies and local storage are isolated from other contexts, and closing it closes its pages.
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
try {
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
} finally {
await context.close();
}
Create and close a context for each task that should not share cookies or local storage. This isolation decision is distinct from process ownership: the same browser can be launched by Puppeteer or managed externally.

Close the browser or detach?
browser.close()shuts down a browser launched by Puppeteer. Use it when your script owns the process and has finished with it.browser.disconnect()detaches Puppeteer from a connected browser without shutting down the browser or closing its pages. Use it when an external supervisor owns the process and other work may still depend on it.
Choosing the wrong method can stop a browser that a separate process expects to keep alive. The lifecycle behavior is documented in the browser-management guide.

Check compatibility before choosing a browser build
Puppeteer’s supported browser versions change with Puppeteer releases. Check the supported browsers table for the version you are using. If you deliberately select another Chrome or Chromium build, set its executable path and validate compatibility instead of assuming every build is interchangeable.

Browser not found after installing Puppeteer
Likely cause: an installation policy or package manager blocked install scripts, so the browser download did not run. Fix: follow the installation guide’s package-manager advice or run npx puppeteer browsers install.
puppeteer-core cannot launch the browser
Likely cause: the local browser is absent, the executable path is wrong, or a channel does not match an installed browser. Fix: confirm the browser is installed and accessible to the process, then provide the correct executablePath or supported channel.

Connection to an existing browser fails
Likely cause: the WebSocket endpoint is unavailable or incorrect. Fix: obtain the active endpoint from the process or service that launched the browser and pass that endpoint to connect().
The browser stops when a script finishes
Likely cause: the script called close() on a browser it did not own. Fix: if the browser must remain available to its external supervisor, detach with disconnect() instead.
