Puppeteer’s API is organized around a browser lifecycle: launch or connect to a browser, create a page, interact with it, collect a result, and close the browser. The official API index labels its documentation version 25.12.0; that is the documentation version, not necessarily the version installed in your project. Check the reference that matches your dependency before relying on a method signature, option, or experimental feature. Open the Puppeteer API reference.

Where is the Puppeteer API reference?

The official API reference is a navigable catalog of documented classes, enumerations, functions, interfaces, namespaces, variables, and type aliases. It is an API lookup resource rather than a linear tutorial: find the relevant type, then open its member documentation for signatures, parameters, return values, support notes, and deprecation status.

The index reviewed here labels the documentation Version 25.12.0. Your installed package may be a different release. Use documentation for the version in your project, especially for options and experimental entries that can change. Many reference classes also mark their constructors as internal; use documented creation methods and accessors instead of directly instantiating or subclassing those classes.

How do Browser, BrowserContext, and Page fit together?

The getting-started guide follows the practical sequence below. In Node.js, the puppeteer package exposes PuppeteerNode, which extends the shared Puppeteer class with Node-specific browser fetching and downloading behavior. launch starts a browser; connect attaches to an existing instance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Browser: Launch or connect to a browser instance.
  2. BrowserContext: Use a context to isolate browser storage such as cookies and local storage.
  3. Page: Create a page (a browser tab or extension background page) and carry out page-level work. A browser can contain multiple pages; popups belong to their parent page’s context.
  4. Result and cleanup: Read data or create an artifact, then close the browser when the work is complete.

For exact context and popup behavior, check the current entries in the API reference rather than assuming that pages have independent storage.

What does Page handle?

Page is the main high-level surface for working with a tab. It inherits from EventEmitter and brings together navigation, selection, page evaluation, waits, keyboard and mouse input, screenshots, and other interactions. A page can also provide access to specialized objects such as Keyboard, Mouse, Tracing, and Coverage for virtual input, tracing, and JavaScript or CSS coverage.

Choosing how to find and use an element

  • Locator: A strategy for locating objects and performing actions. The reference describes automatic precondition checks and retries for failed actions. Consult the API reference and interactions guide for its action behavior; it is more than a selector alias.
  • ElementHandle and JSHandle: References to DOM elements and JavaScript objects. A handle keeps its referenced object from being garbage-collected until disposed, with documented automatic disposal in cases such as navigation or context destruction. Prefer a Locator for ordinary interactions when its behavior fits. In TypeScript, ElementHandle<HTMLSelectElement> provides element-specific type checking.
  • Page selector helpers: Use these when you need direct selection or evaluation and have accounted for their different missing-match behavior, described below.

Working at the network or protocol layer

  • HTTPRequest and HTTPResponse: Network events expose request and response objects. An HTTP 404 or 503 is still a completed request at the HTTP level, so it emits requestfinished, not requestfailed. A redirect finishes one request and starts another. Do not treat every error status as a failed request event.
  • CDPSession: Provides access to raw Chrome DevTools Protocol methods and events. It is a lower-level escape hatch; availability depends on the protocol and browser capabilities. UnsupportedOperation is documented for operations the active protocol does not support.

Which Page methods should I use?

The Page class reference contains a much larger method inventory. These examples show distinctions that affect common automation logic; consult each method’s current entry for complete signatures and options.

Selection and evaluation

Method Behavior When to choose it
page.$(selector) Resolves to the first matching element, or null if there is no match. When you need one match and will handle the absent case.
page.$$(selector) Resolves to all matching elements, or an empty array if there are none. When you need to process a set of matches.
page.$eval(selector, pageFunction) Passes the first matching element to the page function; throws if no element matches. Puppeteer waits if the callback returns a promise. When a missing match should be an error and the work can run in the page.
page.$$eval(selector, pageFunction) Passes the array of matching elements to the page function. Puppeteer waits if the callback returns a promise. When the page function should work over all matches.

Typing, key presses, and navigation

  • page.type(selector, text) sends keydown, keypress/input, and keyup events for each character. Use Keyboard.press() for special keys such as Control or ArrowDown. The documented virtual keyboard behavior does not make macOS shortcuts such as Command+A work; do not assume it behaves exactly like native input.
  • waitForNavigation waits for navigation or reload and treats History API URL changes as navigation. If a click or other action triggers navigation indirectly, arrange the wait around the action to avoid a race; confirm the current method example and options in the reference.
  • Register waitForDevicePrompt and waitForFileChooser before the action that triggers the prompt. The reference also notes limitations around DOM file-picker APIs, so check the relevant method page before building a file-selection flow.

Experimental page APIs

Page.webmcp is marked experimental in the referenced API and documents a Chrome 151+ requirement plus a feature flag. Treat this as version- and browser-dependent: confirm the current entry and browser setup before relying on it in production.

How do I install a compatible browser?

The separate @puppeteer/browsers API covers installing, launching, locating, and managing browser binaries. Puppeteer identifies Chrome for Testing as the default provider and says it tests and guarantees Chrome for Testing binaries. It does not officially support custom providers; anyone implementing one is responsible for compatibility testing, feature verification, and maintenance as Puppeteer and download sources change. Do not assume every Chromium-derived browser is equally tested.

How should I verify an API entry?

  1. Check the installed Puppeteer version in your project and open documentation for that release.
  2. Navigate from the API index to the exact class or method entry rather than relying on a general summary.
  3. Confirm the signature, overload, option defaults, return type, missing-element behavior, event semantics, and support or deprecation notes relevant to your code.
  4. For browser-dependent operations, verify the browser binary and protocol capabilities as well as the Puppeteer method documentation.
  5. Treat entries marked experimental as volatile and recheck their prerequisites before upgrading or deploying.

Puppeteer’s contribution guidance says its public source lives in packages, type tests use tsd, and API documentation is generated from TSDoc and published with releases. It distinguishes public surface from internal implementation: internal constructors are not extension points. These practices do not remove the need to check the versioned reference for the API your dependency actually exposes.
