Both Puppeteer and Playwright default navigation waits to load. Puppeteer offers networkidle0 and networkidle2; Playwright has one networkidle state and also supports commit for navigation. For tests, wait for the specific content or state you need rather than relying on network quiet.
What each waitUntil option means
The available values differ by framework. In particular, the network-idle names are not interchangeable.
| Wait point | Puppeteer | Playwright | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Document parsed | domcontentloaded |
domcontentloaded |
The browser fired DOMContentLoaded. The document has been parsed, but a single-page app may not yet have rendered the content your task needs. |
| Load event | load |
load |
The browser fired the document load event. This is the default for navigation waits in both libraries. |
| Network quiet | networkidle0 or networkidle2 |
networkidle |
Puppeteer waits for at most zero or two network connections, respectively, for at least 500 ms. Playwright’s single state waits for no network connections for at least 500 ms. |
| Response committed | Not a documented PuppeteerLifeCycleEvent |
commit |
Playwright resolves after receiving the response and starting document loading, before waiting for document lifecycle events. |
See the official Puppeteer lifecycle event reference and Playwright Page API for the documented values and definitions.
How to choose a wait condition
Use domcontentloaded for parsed markup
Choose domcontentloaded when the next operation only needs the parsed document. If it needs app-rendered content, follow it with a wait for that content or state: parsing alone does not establish that the app has finished the work relevant to your test.

Use load when the load event matters
Choose load when the browser’s load event is the boundary your workflow actually requires. It is the default, but that does not make it the best choice for every task.
Use commit to begin acting sooner in Playwright
Use commit when you only need confirmation that the response arrived and the document began loading. It is an early navigation milestone, not a signal that page content is ready. Wait separately for the selector or condition needed by the next step.
Use a specific app condition for test readiness
If the real requirement is “the results are visible” or “the button can be used,” wait for that result rather than treating a lifecycle event or a quiet network as proof. Playwright documents auto-waiting for actions and recommends web assertions to assess readiness; it explicitly says, “Don’t use this method for testing, rely on web assertions to assess readiness instead.” See the Page API and Frame API.

Correct usage in each framework
Puppeteer navigation
Puppeteer’s WaitForOptions defaults waitUntil to load. It accepts one lifecycle event or an array; with an array, navigation waits until every listed event has fired. The interface documents a 30,000 ms default timeout, configurable through page timeout settings.
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: ['domcontentloaded', 'load'],
timeout: 30_000,
});
Use an array only when you truly require all the listed milestones. If the task only needs one, a single condition avoids waiting for an unnecessary later event. See Puppeteer’s WaitForOptions reference.
Playwright navigation and load-state waits
Playwright navigation methods default to load and support commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle. By contrast, waitForLoadState() accepts only load, domcontentloaded, or networkidle: it requires a committed navigation and resolves immediately if the requested state has already occurred.

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Example Domain' }).waitFor();
The second line illustrates the distinction: navigation waits for a browser event; the locator wait checks for the content the next step needs. Playwright notes that waitForLoadState() is usually unnecessary because actions auto-wait. Consult the Page API and Frame API for method-specific details.
Network idle: Puppeteer versus Playwright
Puppeteer’s networkidle0 and networkidle2 use different connection thresholds: at most zero or two connections for a minimum of 500 ms. Playwright’s networkidle has one threshold: no connections for at least 500 ms. Do not pass Puppeteer’s suffixed values to Playwright, or assume Playwright has separate zero- and two-connection variants.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA quiet network is not a reliable stand-in for app readiness. Persistent polling, analytics, streaming, or other background requests can make a silence-based wait unhelpful; conversely, network silence does not prove that the particular content or control your test needs is ready. Playwright discourages networkidle for tests in favor of web assertions.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Using
networkidle0ornetworkidle2in Playwright: These are Puppeteer lifecycle labels. Use Playwright’snetworkidleonly when its network condition is genuinely needed, or wait for a specific app condition. - Using Playwright’s
commitin Puppeteer: It is not among the documented Puppeteer lifecycle values. Choose a Puppeteer-supported event such asdomcontentloadedorload. - Assuming DOMContentLoaded means the app is ready: It establishes that document parsing completed, not that a client-rendered result appeared. Wait for the relevant selector or state.
- Waiting for network idle on a page with continuing requests: Background activity may prevent the condition from being useful. Prefer an assertion on the required content or state.
- Confusing navigation waits with load-state waits: In Playwright, navigation’s
waitUntilsupportscommit, butwaitForLoadState()does not. The latter applies to an already committed navigation and may return immediately if the state has already been reached. - Adding every lifecycle value “just in case”: In Puppeteer, an array waits for all listed events, not whichever comes first. Specify only the milestones the task requires.
Or skip the browser setup
For a clean screenshot without setting up Puppeteer or Playwright, make one GET request. For supported parameters and response details, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer support Playwright’s waitUntil value `commit`?
No. `commit` is a documented Playwright navigation value, not a Puppeteer lifecycle event. Use a Puppeteer-supported lifecycle value.

Why does Playwright have `networkidle` but not `networkidle0` and `networkidle2`?
Playwright documents one network-idle state, defined as no network connections for at least 500 ms. The zero- and two-connection labels are Puppeteer-specific.
Which waitUntil value is best for a reliable browser test?
There is no universal best value. Choose a lifecycle point only if the task needs it; for test readiness, check the specific content or state the next step depends on.
