Use a command-line interface (CLI) when you need to run a registry task directly from a terminal or an established build script. Use an API when an application needs structured data or must integrate and orchestrate registry operations. For many teams, the practical answer is both: a CLI for routine commands and an API for tasks the CLI does not expose conveniently.

There is no universal feature or authentication model for a “public registry.” npm, Docker Hub, and GitHub Container Registry offer different interfaces and rules, so choose based on the specific operation and identity your workflow requires.

How to choose between a registry API and a CLI

Your task Likely fit What to verify
Run a package or image command from a terminal, build script, or deployment job CLI That the CLI supports the operation and can authenticate with the identity used by the workflow.
Retrieve structured package or registry data for an application API The endpoint, response fields, pagination, permissions, and applicable limits.
Manage repositories, tokens, organizations, or other account-level settings API may be necessary Whether the registry exposes that management operation through its API or CLI.
Automate routine transfers and also perform a custom integration Hybrid Keep each interface’s credentials and error handling appropriate to its task.

This is a workflow guide, not a guarantee that APIs are always faster or that a CLI and API expose the same features. Confirm support in the documentation for the registry and operation you plan to use.

What APIs and CLIs do well

Choose an API for integration and structured data

An API lets software request data or operations through documented endpoints and incorporate structured responses into an application. npm’s registry API reference, for example, includes package metadata, package-version, and full-text search endpoints, with search parameters for queries and pagination. The returned package fields are registry-provided metadata; they are not independent verification of a package’s quality or security. See the npm Registry API reference.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Docker illustrates why “the registry API” can mean more than one thing. Docker Hub’s Hub API documents management operations such as repositories, access tokens, organizations, groups, and audit logs. Its separate Registry API reference covers Docker Hub’s supported subset of Registry HTTP API V2, focused on pulling, pushing, and deleting images. Do not assume that an endpoint for image transfer also manages Hub accounts or repositories.

Choose a CLI for direct, command-driven work

A CLI is a natural fit when a person or script already runs in a shell and the registry documents a command for the task. Docker documents docker login [OPTIONS] [SERVER] for authenticating to public or private registries. GitHub documents CLI-based authentication and image push and pull commands for ghcr.io. These examples show useful patterns, not universal CLI coverage across registries.

Authentication, permissions, and secret handling

The right interface depends partly on which identity can perform the operation. Token types, scopes, and interactive sign-in behavior vary by registry. For example, npm documents account-associated session tokens for account and token management, fine-grained access tokens that can be scoped to packages, organizations, and operations with configurable expiry, and short-lived OIDC identity tokens from supported CI/CD providers for token exchange. These are npm-specific options, not a standard shared by all registries. Consult npm’s access-token documentation.

GitHub’s guidance for the Container registry says GitHub Actions can use GITHUB_TOKEN for packages associated with the workflow repository; other access scenarios can require a personal access token with package permissions. Check the GitHub Container registry documentation for the permissions relevant to your package and workflow.

For Docker CLI authentication, Docker Desktop saves credentials to the native keychain. Docker also recommends an external credential store or helper over the fallback base64-encoded credentials in config.json. In non-interactive login scripts, Docker’s login documentation explains that using --password-stdin prevents a password from ending up in shell history or log files. Use the registry’s documented secret-handling mechanism rather than placing credentials directly in command text or source code.

Docker Hub’s default login behavior is a web-based device-code flow unless you provide the username flag. That can suit interactive use; a CI job should instead use an authentication method that is documented for non-interactive use and scoped to the job’s needs.

Limits, errors, and dependable automation

Build error handling around the specific service rather than assuming one registry’s limits apply to another. Docker Hub’s Hub API reference describes X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining, and X-RateLimit-Reset response headers before a limit is reached, and a 429 response with Retry-After after it is reached. The reference distinguishes these Hub API limits from Docker Hub image-pull limits and anti-abuse limits. Its current documentation labels the Hub API “2-beta”; verify the live reference and its status before relying on it in production.

GitHub documents pulling a container image by digest when a workflow needs to select the same image reference consistently, rather than relying only on a mutable tag. A digest can support reproducible artifact selection, but it does not replace appropriate access controls or safe credential handling. Check GitHub’s container registry guidance for the documented pull syntax and workflow details.

When a hybrid workflow makes sense

A hybrid is useful when the CLI handles ordinary transfers or interactive tasks, while an API supplies structured data, account management, or an integration the CLI does not expose. For example, a team might use documented CLI commands to authenticate and push an image, then have an application query registry metadata through an API. Treat this as a design option, not a vendor-mandated pattern: verify support, authentication, and permissions separately for each operation.

Before implementing either path, write down the exact task, the registry identity that will perform it, and whether it runs interactively or in CI. Then confirm the supported interface, required permissions, credential handling, and limits in that registry’s current documentation. That short check prevents the common mistake of choosing an interface based on its name rather than the operation it actually supports.
