To invest in shares on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), you need an account with an eligible securities broker, the required securities-account arrangements, and a Unique Identification Number (UIN). Your broker places your buy or sell orders on the exchange; the Central Depository Company (CDC) supports electronic custody and delivery of shares, while the National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL) handles clearing and settlement. Share prices can rise or fall, so check a broker’s authorization, charges, and account records before trading.
What does buying a share mean?
A share represents an ownership interest in a listed company. If you buy shares, you own that interest; you do not have a guaranteed return. The market price can rise or fall, and you may lose money if you sell for less than you paid. The value and liquidity of a share depend on the company and market conditions.
There are two broad ways shares can be offered to investors:
- Initial public offering (IPO): You apply to subscribe to shares offered by an issuer in the primary market. PSX advises reading the prospectus and reviewing the company’s risks, financial information, use of proceeds, litigation or default disclosures, business overview, and promoter background before deciding. - Secondary-market trade: You buy shares from or sell them to another market participant through the exchange, at a price determined in the market.
What do PSX, your broker, CDC, and NCCPL do?
These organizations have different roles in a trade. PSX is the exchange where orders are matched. A securities broker gives you access to the market and submits your order. CDC supports electronic share custody and delivery through securities-account arrangements. NCCPL provides clearing and settlement, including the processing of payments and securities after trades.

| Organization or account | Role for an investor |
|---|---|
| PSX | The exchange where buy and sell orders are traded. |
| Broker | Opens and services your brokerage account and sends your order to the exchange. |
| CDC sub-account or Investor Account | Securities-account arrangements supporting the custody and movement of shares. Ask CDC and your broker about the current procedures, control arrangements, and charges. |
| NCCPL | Clears and settles trades. PSX’s investor guide says shares bought or sold are settled through NCCPL. PSX Guide to Investors. |
| UIN | Your Unique Identification Number, assigned as part of the investor identification and account process. |
PSX also describes optional services through NCCPL National Custodial Services or CDC Direct Settlement Services that can provide clearing, settlement, or custody while a broker executes the trade. These are optional arrangements, not requirements for every beginner. Confirm their current terms and charges with the relevant provider.
How do you open a PSX brokerage account?
PSX says investors can trade through active TREC (Trading Rights Entitlement Certificate) holders recognized by PSX and licensed by the Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). Check current status before opening an account: broker authorization and registered offices can change. Use PSX’s brokerage-firms listing and confirm licensing with SECP.

- Compare eligible brokers. Check their active PSX TREC status and SECP licence. Consider communication, research and support, online-trading availability, trade confirmations, charges, and whether the service suits your needs. A broker’s services do not guarantee investment performance.
- Review the documents and terms. Ask for the account-opening form, standard terms, fee schedule, and details of any authority you would give another person to operate the account. Read them before signing and retain copies.
- Open the brokerage account in your own name. Complete the broker’s current onboarding requirements. Ask how identity verification and any online onboarding steps work, because procedures can vary.
- Arrange a securities account. Set up the CDC sub-account or other applicable securities-account arrangement, such as a CDC Investor Account. Ask who controls movements of shares, how you can monitor them, and what charges apply.
- Obtain your account identifiers. The process assigns a client identification or account number and a UIN. Keep these details and your account-opening documents secure.

How does placing and monitoring a trade work?
- Decide what to buy or sell. Make your decision using information you have evaluated; do not treat rumors or promises of unusually high returns as a substitute for analysis.
- Send an instruction to your broker. You can place an order through the broker or its online trading application, if available. Check the order details before submitting.
- The broker submits the order to PSX. An order is not the same as an executed trade: execution depends on the market and whether it is matched.
- Review confirmation and charges. After execution, check the trade confirmation for transaction details and applicable charges. Compare it with your instruction and account records.
- Check alerts and statements. PSX describes end-of-day NCCPL trade alerts and CDC securities-movement alerts. Review these along with broker statements so you can identify activity you did not expect.
Keep transaction confirmations and account records. PSX’s investor guide and account-opening checklist describe these investor checks.
What costs should you ask about?
Trading costs may include the broker’s commission, CDC or exchange charges, and taxes. Commissions vary among brokers, and applicable taxes depend on current rules and your circumstances. Do not rely on an old tax-rate example as a current rate.
Before opening the account, request a written list of transaction fees, commissions, and CDC charges. Ask which charges apply when you buy, sell, hold, or move securities, and how they appear on confirmations and statements. Check tax treatment against current official rules or a qualified tax professional.

How can a beginner reduce avoidable risks?
- Use a broker whose PSX TREC status and SECP licensing you have verified; check current listings rather than relying on old directories or messages.
- Keep the brokerage account in your own name, understand the account terms, and store account documents and confirmations.
- Trade through the exchange. Avoid unregistered intermediaries and off-market arrangements.
- Do not make decisions based on rumors or claims of guaranteed or unrealistic returns. Consider the risk and liquidity of an investment before placing an order.
- Check trade confirmations, account statements, NCCPL alerts, and CDC securities-movement alerts for activity and charges you recognize.
- Be deliberate about account authorization. PSX warns that an investor may be responsible for transactions made by an authorized account operator; document any authority you grant and understand its scope.
For practical account and investor precautions, consult PSX’s Account Opening Checklist and investor-awareness materials. Broker status, service terms, charges, and tax rules can change, so verify current details directly with the relevant regulator or provider.
