Choose a PSP if you want to play physical PSP UMD discs; choose a PlayStation Vita if you want Vita game cards, Vita-specific controls, or supported digital PSP games. A Vita cannot play UMDs, and its PSP compatibility is limited to certain digital titles. Sony says new Vita Store purchases will end in each region starting July 2027, so check regional availability and the specific games you want before buying.

Start with the games you want to play

The format is the clearest dividing line. A PSP with a UMD drive plays PSP discs. The Vita uses its own game cards and can play digital Vita titles, as well as some supported digital PSP games. PSP UMDs and Vita cards are different formats: the Vita cannot read UMDs, and owning a PSP disc does not give you access to its digital version on Vita.

  • Already own PSP UMDs? Choose a PSP model with a UMD drive. The PSP Go is digital-only and has no UMD drive.
  • Want Vita games? Choose a Vita; PSP hardware cannot play Vita game cards.
  • Want PSP games on a Vita? Check that each title is supported and available through a supported digital route. Sony says some PSP titles are incompatible or cannot be downloaded or copied to Vita.

Sony’s Vita user guide explains PSP software compatibility and control options; its Vita FAQ confirms that the system does not support UMD.

PSP: UMD discs, with a model caveat

Sony’s PSP-2000 specification lists a read-only UMD drive, so a UMD-capable PSP is the straightforward choice for a physical PSP collection. Confirm the exact model in a used listing: the PSP Go lacks the drive. PSP commerce functionality ended on July 2, 2021, according to Sony’s 2021 Store announcement.

Vita: game cards and supported digital titles

Vita games are available on Vita cards or as digital downloads. For PSP software, Sony’s guide describes downloading or copying compatible titles, but support is not universal. Verify the exact game rather than assuming the entire PSP catalog works. The Vita can assign some PSP controls to its right stick, and optional bilinear filtering may soften graphics; Sony notes that results vary by game.

Sony’s PSP game guide covers these compatibility and control caveats, while its Vita game guide identifies Vita cards and PlayStation Store downloads as game sources.

Vita Store purchases are time-sensitive

PlayStation Support currently says, “Starting July 2027, the PlayStation Store will close on PS3 and PS Vita in your region.” After the applicable regional closure, new purchases through the Store on those devices will not be possible. Sony says the change reflects the older devices’ inability to support updated commerce, payment, and security requirements. The notice also distinguishes new purchases from access to previously acquired content; the closure does not mean all existing purchases stop working. Check Sony’s regional notice for current dates and details.

Sony’s April 19, 2021 announcement had said Vita purchases would continue, but that statement described the decision at that time. The current support notice supersedes it for future Vita Store purchases. Store access and availability can vary by region.

Controls and screen differences

Feature PSP-2000 Original Vita OLED model
Display 4.3-inch TFT, 480×272 pixels 5-inch OLED, 960×544 pixels
Analog controls One analog stick Two analog sticks
Game media UMD disc on UMD-drive models Vita game card; digital downloads

These are Sony’s published specifications for the PSP-2000 and the launch Vita OLED model, not measurements of every revision or an independent comparison. The original Vita also has a front multi-touch display and rear touch pad; Sony’s launch-era models included Wi-Fi and 3G/Wi-Fi options. The Vita’s second stick can be assigned PSP controls in supported circumstances, but it does not make every PSP game compatible or guarantee better control in every title.

Sony lists the PSP-2000 at approximately 189 g including its battery, and says that revision was 33% lighter and 19% slimmer than the PSP-1000. Those figures apply to the PSP-2000 comparison, not all PSP models. Its specification also includes stereo speakers, Wi-Fi, a Memory Stick PRO Duo slot, and a UMD drive.

Storage and used-console checks

Before buying either system used, verify what is included rather than assuming storage or accessories come with it. Sony notes that PSP game saves use a memory card on Vita, and that a card is needed for certain saves, downloadable content, photos, and videos. Card needs vary by model and use; confirm whether a Vita listing includes a compatible card, especially for a PCH-1000 unit.

  • Confirm the model number and, for a PSP, whether it has a UMD drive.
  • Check the display for scratches, dead pixels, or other visible damage; test buttons and analog sticks.
  • Ask whether the battery holds a charge and whether the charger or cable is included.
  • Inspect the PSP’s UMD door and test disc reading if possible.
  • Confirm included storage and whether games in listing photos are actually part of the sale.

These are practical checks for a used purchase, not claims about a model-wide failure rate. Sony’s Vita FAQ and user guide provide model and memory-card details.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose a UMD-drive PSP if playing your physical PSP discs is the priority. Avoid the PSP Go if you need UMD support.
  • Choose a Vita if you want Vita game cards, two analog sticks, or a larger, higher-resolution screen on the original OLED model. It can also run supported digital PSP games, subject to title and availability limits.
  • Decide title by title if your main goal is a particular PSP game. Check compatibility and whether you can still obtain it in your region; do not infer access from owning a UMD or from broad library claims.

There is no universal winner: the formats and specific games you want matter more than a general claim about which system has the larger library or is cheaper. Current prices and complete region-by-region library counts are not established here, so compare actual listings and availability for your situation.
