Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are officially listed for Grand Theft Auto VI. If you already own one, the available official information does not give a strong reason to buy the other just for GTA VI. If you are choosing a new console, PS5 has an official feature-based endorsement: Rockstar labels it “Plays Best On,” and PlayStation describes support for DualSense and PS5 audio features. That wording is not a side-by-side performance test, so it does not prove better frame rates, resolution, or image quality than Xbox.
Will GTA 6 be on PS5 and Xbox Series X?
Yes. Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as GTA VI platforms. The game is not listed for PS4 on PlayStation’s product page. Rockstar currently gives the release date as November 19, 2026. Rockstar’s GTA VI page is the place to check for updates to its platform and release information.
Does GTA 6 play better on PS5?
Rockstar’s official game page labels PS5 “Plays Best On.” PlayStation’s Mary Yee, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said that the game would use PS5’s immersive features. These are official platform-positioning statements, not results from a published comparison test.
The official materials cited here do not provide a PS5-versus-Xbox benchmark for GTA VI. They do not establish a difference in frame rate, resolution, loading performance, or overall image quality. Treat “Plays Best On” as a reason to consider the PS5 experience—not as proof that the Xbox version performs worse. PlayStation’s announcement explains the features it highlights.

What PS5-specific GTA VI features has PlayStation described?
PlayStation says GTA VI will use PS5 features including DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, effects through the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and the PS5 SSD. These features may matter if you value tactile controller feedback, audio effects, and the experience PlayStation describes. They do not, by themselves, establish a graphics or performance advantage over Xbox.
Read PlayStation’s US GTA VI product page for its feature descriptions. These are PS5-specific features cited by PlayStation; they should not be read as evidence that Xbox lacks every comparable capability.

Which console should you buy for GTA 6?
Buy for the platform you already own
If you already have a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S, the cited official information offers no compelling reason to buy the other console solely for GTA VI. Your current game library, the platform your friends use, and your controller preference are practical factors in whether switching makes sense.

Choose PS5 if its described features matter to you
If you are starting from scratch and want the DualSense, controller-speaker, and Tempest 3D AudioTech features PlayStation describes, PS5 is the clearest feature-led choice. Rockstar’s “Plays Best On” label adds an official reason to lean that way, but it is not a measurable performance comparison.

Choose Xbox if it better fits your setup
Xbox Series X is an officially supported option. If your existing library, friends, or preferred controller are on Xbox, those considerations can outweigh a platform label when no comparative GTA VI benchmark is available.
Check local hardware prices and availability
Current PS5 and Xbox console prices, bundles, and stock are not established by the cited sources. Compare current local listings before buying; do not rely on old console-price figures. GTA VI’s game price is separate from the cost of the console.

GTA VI editions, prices, and the physical-package catch
Take-Two and Rockstar announced US prices of $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition on June 24, 2026. PlayStation’s US product page displays the same prices, which are US-market figures and may change. Check the price and edition available in your country before ordering. The announcement also gives November 12, 2026 as the start of digital preload and expected availability of the physical code-in-box version; the game’s stated release date is November 19, 2026.

“Physical” does not mean a game disc in this case. Rockstar Support says the GTA VI physical package contains a download code and no disc. If you buy a boxed copy, make sure a code-in-box package suits you. Rockstar Support’s editions and versions page describes the package and its platform-account region details.

What to know about GTA VI code regions
Rockstar Support says PlayStation code redemptions are region-specific and recommends buying from a retailer in the country associated with the platform account to avoid activation issues. The same support page states Xbox codes are not region-locked. Check the listing and your account territory before buying a code, particularly if purchasing a PlayStation package from another country.
