“M.2” alone does not mean an SSD will work in a PS5. For the CFI-71XX model covered by Sony’s current safety guide, the drive must be an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 model with an M key, fit the capacity and physical limits, and have effective heat dissipation. Sony also cautions that meeting its listed specifications does not guarantee that every third-party drive will work.
What SSD is compatible with PS5?
Sony’s M.2 SSD requirements specify an M.2 NVMe drive using the PCI-Express Gen4x4 interface and an M key. M.2 SATA drives are not supported. The figures below are from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s undated CFI-71XX PS5 Safety Guide; check the manual for your exact console before buying, since console models and guidance may differ.

These are limits for the complete installed assembly, including any heatsink or other heat-dissipation parts—not just the bare SSD. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster, but that recommendation is not a substitute for checking every interface, capacity, size, and thermal-fit requirement.
How much SSD storage can PS5 support?
The CFI-71XX guide lists M.2 drives from 250 GB through 8 TB. Sony raised the maximum from 4 TB to 8 TB in a 2023 announcement; 8 TB is the current upper limit in the cited guide, while 4 TB is historical context, not today’s stated maximum. See Sony’s 2023 PS5 system software update announcement.

Does a PS5 SSD need a heatsink?
Sony warns that an M.2 SSD can reach high temperatures and requires effective heat dissipation. If the drive does not include a heat-dissipation mechanism, Sony says to add an appropriate heat conductor, heatsink, heat transfer sheet, or combination. A drive with a built-in heatsink may simplify installation, but the complete assembly still has to meet the console’s dimensional limits.
Do not assume that any generic heatsink will fit any SSD or PS5 chassis. Before purchase, check the exact SSD model and the dimensions of the assembled drive, including cooling parts, against the guide for your console. Also review the SSD manufacturer’s installation and thermal guidance.

Can I add an SSD to my PS5, and what can it store?
Yes. Sony says installed M.2 storage can store, download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. It provides additional internal storage, rather than replacing the console’s built-in storage.
How to install an M.2 SSD
The broad process is to remove the relevant covers, set the spacer for the drive’s length, insert the SSD into its connector, fasten it, replace the covers, start the console, and follow the on-screen formatting instructions. The cover-removal steps depend on the console chassis. Sony’s installation guide and model-specific manuals should take precedence over instructions for a different PS5; for example, the CFI-20XX manual describes that model’s procedure. Use a screwdriver that matches the screw, as Sony directs.

- Check the drive’s exact model, NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 interface, M key, capacity, and M.2 size.
- Verify the full assembly’s width, length, and thickness after adding any heatsink or thermal parts.
- Install and secure the drive following the model-specific steps, then replace the covers.
- Power on the console and complete the formatting prompt before using the drive.
How to compare PS5 SSD candidates
Sony’s listed specifications are compatibility requirements, not a promise that every drive meeting them will work. Treat named products as examples, not as an exclusive approved list or a universal guarantee.
- Exact model and interface: confirm the precise model number and that it is NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 with an M key; “M.2” by itself is insufficient.
- Capacity and size: compare the drive with the guide’s capacity range and supported form factors.
- Read-speed rating: compare the manufacturer’s sequential-read rating with Sony’s 5,500 MB/s recommendation; a rating alone does not establish compatibility or real-world performance.
- Installed dimensions and cooling: include a built-in or separately purchased heatsink and thermal parts in the fit calculation.
- Warranty and local price: check the seller and manufacturer’s terms for the exact model and your region; prices and availability vary.
Sony Direct US listings provide examples of officially licensed drives: SanDisk Optimus GX PRO models in 1 TB and 2 TB, and WD_BLACK SN850P models in 2 TB and 8 TB. Sony describes their heatsinks as designed for PS5 installation.
