But Sony’s published CPU and GPU specifications are the same, so they do not establish a gaming performance upgrade. Sony has not published a direct Slim-versus-launch-model cooling or noise comparison, either. The practical choice comes down to size, storage, disc-drive options, and price—not a proven speed or temperature advantage.
What “original PS5” means in this comparison
Here, “original PS5” means Sony’s 2020 launch design, not later hardware revisions. That distinction matters: the smaller model was announced in October 2023, while other PS5 revisions are separate designs.
How much smaller is the PS5 Slim?
Sony’s measurements show a substantially smaller, lighter enclosure. The comparison has an important caveat: the 2020 dimensions exclude the base and largest projection, while the 2023 dimensions exclude projecting parts, so the measurement notes are not identical.

Sony says the 2023 design is more than 30% smaller by volume than the previous models, and that its disc model is 18% lighter and its Digital Edition 24% lighter. Those are Sony’s stated comparisons; the announcement does not explain its volume-calculation method. See Sony’s October 2023 announcement and the 2020 launch specifications.

If the console needs to fit in a desk space or cabinet, compare the dimensions for the exact version you plan to buy and leave room for cables and airflow. Sony’s cited specifications do not give a universal cabinet-clearance rule.
Does the Slim have more storage or better performance?
Advertised storage
Sony lists a 1TB SSD for the 2023 smaller model, compared with 825GB in the 2020 launch specifications. These are advertised capacities, not the amount of free space available to install games. Sources: Sony’s 2023 announcement and 2020 launch specifications.

CPU and graphics
Sony lists the same core CPU and GPU figures for the smaller model as it did for the launch PS5: an AMD Zen 2 CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads, variable frequency up to 3.5 GHz, and AMD RDNA 2-based graphics with variable frequency up to 2.23 GHz and 10.3 TFLOPS. The published specifications therefore do not describe the Slim as a more powerful gaming console. They are not a direct benchmark of every game or hardware revision. Front ports
Connectivity differs at the front: Sony’s 2020 specification lists one USB-C and one USB-A port, while the smaller model’s specification lists two USB-C ports. Both list two rear USB-A SuperSpeed ports. Sources: Sony’s 2023 announcement and 2020 launch specifications.

Does the PS5 Slim run hotter, cooler, quieter, or louder?
The available official information does not establish a thermal or noise winner between the 2023 Slim and the 2020 launch design. Sony’s 2020 teardown describes the original design priorities: engineer Yasuhiro Ootori said the team had to balance “every aspect of the system, from focusing on reducing the noise level to enhancing the cooling capacity, more than ever before.” That explains the original design intent; it is not a comparative test of the Slim. Without a dependable controlled comparison of the two models, heatsink appearance, exhaust readings, or individual owner reports cannot establish that one generally runs hotter, cooler, quieter, or louder. They also do not, by themselves, prove a difference in reliability.

What changes with the disc drive?
The original standard PS5 includes an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive; the original Digital Edition does not support Blu-ray discs, according to Sony’s 2020 PS5 FAQ.
The smaller Digital Edition has a port for Sony’s attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, which can be added later but is sold separately. The smaller disc model includes the drive. Sony also says a horizontal stand comes with the smaller model; its vertical stand is a separate purchase compatible with all PS5 models. These details are in Sony’s 2023 announcement. Its standalone-drive launch price was historical, not a current price.

Which PS5 should you choose?
- Choose the Slim if enclosure size or weight matters: Sony’s listed measurements show a smaller, lighter design.
- Consider the Slim if advertised SSD capacity matters: Sony lists 1TB rather than the launch model’s 825GB.
- Choose by how you use discs: The Slim Digital Edition can be paired with a separately sold drive; the 2020 Digital Edition cannot use Blu-ray discs.
- Compare the actual listings before buying: Check regional price, included accessories, and bundle contents for the specific model. Sony’s historical launch pricing does not establish current pricing.
- If you already own a working launch PS5: Sony’s published specifications establish no gaming-performance reason to replace it with the Slim.
