U.S. stock update, checked Monday, August 10, 2026: you generally do not need to wait for a major PS5 restock. Purchasable listings were showing on Sony Direct, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart when checked. That is evidence of availability across several retailers—not a guarantee of nationwide inventory. Enter your ZIP code, select shipping or pickup, and confirm the promise at checkout because availability can differ by store, region, and fulfillment method.

The best choice for most buyers is the 1TB PS5 with a disc drive if you own physical games or want the flexibility to buy used discs. Choose the 825GB Digital Edition if you are committed to downloading games. The 2TB PS5 Pro is for buyers willing to pay more for enhanced graphics and storage, preferably with a compatible 4K display.

Last checked: August 10, 2026, U.S. Prices and stock can change without notice. A product page that is available now may lose shipping, pickup, or add-to-cart availability during checkout.

Where to buy a PS5 right now

The following direct product pages showed the listed availability and prices at the time of checking. The Sony Direct prices were displayed as whole-dollar amounts, while several other retailers showed prices ending in 99 cents. Always verify the exact seller, condition, fulfillment method, and final total before paying.

Amazon: no first-party Amazon stock is confirmed in this update. Do not rely on a search result or a third-party tracker. Open the live Amazon results and verify the seller, condition, price, and checkout total immediately before publication or purchase.

GameStop: the tested standard PS5 listing combined new, pre-owned, and refurbished options, but the selected standard edition was marked “Currently Unavailable.” Do not treat a price shown for another condition or edition as proof that a new console is in stock.

What “PS5 restock” means in 2026

During the 2020–2021 shortage, “restock” usually meant a major retailer receiving a limited shipment that could sell out quickly. That language remains common in search results, but it is not the most useful question for a U.S. shopper in this update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As of August 10, 2026, the practical questions are:

  • Which PS5 model is available?
  • Is it new, certified refurbished, restored, open-box, or pre-owned?
  • Who is selling and shipping it?
  • Is the price close to the current U.S. MSRP?
  • Can the retailer deliver to your ZIP code or offer pickup?

A retailer may show a console as available nationally while your local store has no pickup inventory or the shipping option disappears at checkout. Marketplace listings can also remain visible after the retailer-controlled inventory sells out. Treat “in stock” as provisional until the order is accepted.

Older pages such as 2021 Amazon restock coverage and 2021 retailer restock coverage may still rank in search results. Their dates, prices, and shortage-era advice are not evidence of current inventory.

Which PS5 should you buy?

If you… Buy Why
Own PS4 or PS5 discs, buy used games, or want to trade games PS5 1TB with disc drive It plays supported physical PS5 and PS4 games and disc-based movies, avoiding the need to purchase a drive later.
Buy every game digitally and want the lowest new-console price PS5 Digital Edition, 825GB It costs less and has no drive mechanism, but all game purchases depend on your PlayStation account and PlayStation Store access.
Want enhanced graphics, ray tracing, and more built-in storage PS5 Pro, 2TB Sony lists PSSR, optimized console performance, and advanced ray tracing, but improvements vary by game and the console is digital-only out of the box.
Want the lowest official-store price Sony-certified refurbished Digital Edition It was listed at $499 on Sony Direct, subject to inventory and checkout confirmation.
Want a disc-capable console below new-console pricing Sony-certified refurbished disc model It was listed at $549 on Sony Direct, subject to inventory and checkout confirmation.

PS5 Console, 1TB, with disc drive

The current slim disc model is the safest default when you are unsure which version fits your library. Sony identifies the current slim console in the CFI-2100 model group and describes it as supporting PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs as well as digital downloads. See Sony’s PS5 comparison page and the Sony Direct product page.

The drive lets you:

  • Play supported physical PS5 and PS4 games.
  • Buy, borrow, trade, or resell physical games.
  • Use 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD media.
  • Avoid the cost and model-compatibility question of adding a drive later.

The trade-off is the higher purchase price. A disc drive also does not guarantee that every future PlayStation release will have a physical edition.

The listed console includes a DualSense controller, HDMI cable, AC power cord, USB cable, horizontal stand feet, and pre-installed ASTRO’s PLAYROOM. The vertical stand is sold separately.

PS5 Digital Edition, 825GB

The Digital Edition is the sensible choice if you already buy every game digitally and do not need physical movies or discs. Its currently listed storage is 825GB, not 1TB, and there is no disc drive in the box. Digital games are tied to the PlayStation account used to buy them, so they generally cannot be resold or traded like physical discs.

Sony says compatible slim Digital Edition model groups can accept an optional disc drive. This is not a universal upgrade for every older Digital Edition: check the model group before buying. Sony’s drive setup also requires an internet connection to pair the drive with the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding a drive later can reduce or eliminate the Digital Edition’s initial savings. The vertical stand is also sold separately.

What Sony’s January 2028 notice means for the disc decision

Sony’s current PS5 product pages state that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers, while discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. Read the notice on Sony’s PS5 page and the 1TB console page.

This does not mean that existing physical games suddenly stop working, and it does not make the disc model obsolete today. Buy the disc model if you already own physical games, value used-game pricing, or want a disc-capable movie player. Buy the Digital Edition if you are starting a digital library and do not expect to buy physical releases. This recommendation is based on Sony’s published notice, not on unconfirmed reports about future disc manufacturing.

Is the PS5 Pro worth the extra money?

The official U.S. MSRP for the PS5 Pro is $899.99. That is $250 more than the $649.99 base PS5 MSRP and $300 more than the $599.99 Digital Edition MSRP. Sony lists a 2TB SSD, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, optimized console performance, and advanced ray tracing for the Pro. The practical benefit depends on whether a particular game supports or benefits from those features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Pro if you:

  • Have or plan to buy a good 4K display.
  • Care about image quality, ray tracing, and frame-rate compromises.
  • Want 2TB of internal storage without starting with the base models’ smaller drives.
  • Understand that not every PS5 game receives the same enhancement.
  • Are comfortable buying a separate drive if you need physical media.

The base PS5 is the better value if your main goal is access to PS5 games, you use a standard 4K TV or 1080p display, or the $899.99 price is difficult to justify. The Pro is digital-only out of the box; its disc drive and vertical stand are separate purchases. Sony also lists a small number of PS4 compatibility exceptions in its PS5 Pro compatibility information.

Current PS5 prices and the April 2026 increase

Sony raised current U.S. recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026. Use these figures as the benchmark for a new, standard console:

Model Current official U.S. MSRP Storage and drive
PS5 Console $649.99 1TB SSD, disc drive
PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 825GB SSD, no disc drive included
PS5 Pro $899.99 2TB SSD, digital-only

See Sony’s April 2, 2026 price announcement. Sony Direct currently displays the three new-console prices as $649, $599, and $899, respectively, while Best Buy and Target commonly show the corresponding 99-cent prices in the table above. Compare the exact listing and checkout total rather than assuming a difference is a sale.

Older articles may still quote $499.99 or $449.99, among other historical figures. Those are not the current new-console MSRP after the April 2, 2026 increase. Sony also published an earlier August 2025 price announcement, which is another reason a price without a date can be misleading.

A price below MSRP can be legitimate, but identify what explains it:

  • A temporary sale or retailer promotion.
  • A game or second controller omitted from the comparison.
  • Certified refurbished, restored, open-box, or pre-owned condition.
  • A marketplace seller rather than the retailer itself.
  • An old or incorrect product listing.

A price above MSRP is not automatically fraudulent, but the premium should be explained by a bundle, limited edition, extra controller, game, or another included item. Do not compare a new retailer-sold console with a refurbished or marketplace listing using only the headline price.

Certified refurbished and pre-owned alternatives

If new-console pricing is too high, a refurbished unit can be reasonable—but it is not equivalent to new stock. Confirm the seller, condition, warranty, return period, included accessories, and packaging before ordering.

Source Condition and model Price/status in the checked snapshot
Sony Direct Certified refurbished Digital Edition $499 listed; confirm inventory at checkout
Sony Direct Certified refurbished disc model $549 listed; confirm inventory at checkout
Best Buy Geek Squad Certified Refurbished disc model $519.99 shown on the checked page
Best Buy Refurbished Digital Edition $449.99 was shown but marked sold out
Walmart “Restored: Like New” disc model $549.99 shown alongside the $649 new listing
GameStop Pre-owned or refurbished options Around $503.49 appeared, but availability was not confirmed for the selected standard edition

Do not assume that “restored,” “like new,” “refurbished,” and “pre-owned” mean the same thing. A used-console purchase should state who inspected it, what warranty applies, how long returns remain available, whether the original controller and cables are included, and whether the original packaging is included.

How to buy safely from a PS5 listing

  1. Choose the model first. Decide between the 1TB disc model, 825GB Digital Edition, and 2TB Pro before opening retailer links. Searching only for “PS5” makes it easy to select the wrong edition.
  2. Use the direct product page. Do not rely on a shopping-search result, a “from” price, or a restock tracker. Open the retailer’s actual SKU.
  3. Enter your ZIP code. Check shipping, delivery date, store pickup, and local inventory. A nationwide product page is not a guarantee for your address.
  4. Read the exact title and condition. Look for “new,” “pre-owned,” “refurbished,” “restored,” or “open box.” Confirm whether the listing says 825GB, 1TB, or 2TB and whether a disc drive is included.
  5. Check the seller. Prefer Sony Direct or a retailer’s own inventory. On Walmart and Best Buy, distinguish “sold and shipped by” the retailer from marketplace offers. Sony’s buying guide recommends authorized retailers for new PlayStation products.
  6. Check what is in the box. A bundle may include a game or extra controller, while a suspiciously cheap listing may say “console only.” Do not assume a pictured accessory is included.
  7. Review the final checkout total. Add tax and shipping, and remove optional protection plans from the console-price comparison. Also check membership requirements, bundle contents, return terms, and warranty coverage.
  8. Confirm the market and power compatibility. For imported products, verify that the unit is intended for the U.S. market and that warranty coverage applies in the United States.

Sony warns that products from unauthorized sources may create authenticity, functionality, return, and warranty problems. It also notes that lost or stolen products can potentially be suspended from PlayStation services. That makes a very cheap private or unclear marketplace listing a poor substitute for a modestly discounted, traceable purchase.

Retailer-specific traps to watch for

Best Buy

Best Buy can show the same general console name across multiple SKUs, conditions, and marketplace offers. On the 1TB disc listing and Digital Edition listing, verify whether the offer is sold by Best Buy or by another seller. Pickup is store-specific, and a new first-party listing may appear alongside “More buying options” for different conditions and prices.

Target

Target’s checked product pages showed the consoles in stock, but pickup and shipping depend on the selected location. The listed console pages specify a 30-day return period and one-year limited warranty; confirm the terms on the product page and at checkout. Target also excludes some U.S. territories and locations from shipping, so shipping eligibility must be checked for your address.

Walmart

Walmart mixes Walmart-sold inventory with marketplace offers. The checked new disc listing showed $649 and “Sold and shipped by Walmart.com,” while the $549.99 option was labeled “Restored: Like New.” A “from” price may refer to a different seller or condition. Do not call the restored or marketplace price the new Walmart-console price. The checked Walmart-sold listing also showed free 30-day returns, subject to the retailer’s current terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GameStop

GameStop pages may combine new, pre-owned, and refurbished conditions, producing a broad price range. Select the exact edition and condition before relying on the price. In this check, the standard edition was marked unavailable even though pre-owned and refurbished options appeared elsewhere on the page.

Used-console and private-seller checklist

If you buy from an individual or a local used marketplace, reduce the risk before handing over money:

  • Ask to see the console boot into the home screen.
  • Confirm it connects to PlayStation Network and is not account-locked.
  • For a disc model, insert and read a disc.
  • Check that the DualSense controller, HDMI cable, power cord, and other promised accessories are present.
  • Look for overheating, unusual fan noise, damaged ports, liquid damage, or missing panels.
  • Ask for the serial number and proof of purchase where appropriate.
  • Use a payment method with buyer protection; avoid irreversible payments to strangers.
  • Do not buy a console that may be stolen, reported lost, or banned from PlayStation services.

What to do if the PS5 sells out during checkout

Do not immediately pay a large markup. Use this recovery path:

  1. Try shipping if pickup disappeared, or try pickup at another nearby store.
  2. Re-enter your ZIP code and refresh the exact product page.
  3. Check Sony Direct, then check Best Buy, Target, and Walmart separately rather than assuming every retailer shares the same inventory.
  4. Remove an unavailable accessory, protection plan, or bundle component from the cart and retry.
  5. Search for the exact model—“PS5 1TB disc,” “PS5 Digital Edition 825GB,” or “PS5 Pro 2TB”—instead of searching only “PS5.”
  6. Consider Sony-certified refurbished stock if the new model is unavailable and the terms are acceptable.
  7. Only consider a marketplace or private seller after checking condition, seller identity, warranty, returns, U.S. region, and the final price.

How to tell whether a cheap PS5 is a good deal

Use the current MSRP as the starting point, then classify the offer:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Below MSRP and sold by the retailer: potentially a legitimate sale, but check whether it is an older SKU, open-box unit, or incomplete bundle.
  • Below MSRP from a marketplace seller: verify condition, seller feedback, warranty, returns, region, and shipping costs.
  • Below MSRP from Sony Direct: check whether it is certified refurbished rather than new.
  • Above MSRP: ask what the premium buys—such as an extra controller, game, protection plan, or limited edition. Without a clear addition, keep checking authorized or first-party inventory.

Do not use a $549.99 or $499.99 figure as the current new-console MSRP. Those numbers may describe old pricing, a sale, or a non-new condition.

Update log

  • August 10, 2026: Checked U.S. Sony Direct, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, GameStop, and Amazon product/search pages. Sony Direct, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart showed purchasable new-console listings for at least some models; GameStop’s selected standard edition was unavailable; Amazon first-party availability was not confirmed.
  • Price benchmark: Sony’s current U.S. MSRP took effect April 2, 2026: $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro.
  • Next review trigger: Recheck after any Sony price change, major bundle release, retailer sellout, or Sony announcement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to wait for a PS5 restock?

Not based on the U.S. retailer check performed on August 10, 2026. Sony Direct, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart showed purchasable listings. Local inventory and shipping can change, so confirm your ZIP code and checkout promise before ordering.

Is the PS5 Digital Edition upgradeable with a disc drive?

Sony says the additional disc drive works with compatible slim Digital Edition model groups. Check the console’s model group before buying; the drive also needs an internet connection to pair during setup.

Is the PS5 disc model still worth buying after Sony’s 2028 notice?

It can be. The disc model remains useful for existing PS4 and PS5 discs, used-game purchases, trades, and disc-based movies. Sony’s notice concerns newly released PlayStation games from January 2028; it does not say existing discs will stop working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does one retailer show a PS5 for less than $599 or $649?

The lower price may be a sale, refurbished or restored unit, open-box or pre-owned console, marketplace offer, incomplete bundle, or outdated listing. Check the exact model, condition, seller, warranty, return terms, and final checkout total.

Is Sony Direct the safest place to buy a new PS5?

Sony Direct is the first-party source. Sony also recommends authorized retailers. At Best Buy, Target, Walmart, or another retailer, prefer the retailer’s own inventory and verify that a marketplace seller is not substituting a used, imported, refurbished, or overpriced product.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: As of August 10, 2026, U.S. shoppers should check out an available PS5 from Sony Direct, Best Buy, Target, or Walmart rather than waiting for a shortage-era “restock.” Buy the $649.99 1TB disc model for physical media, the $599.99 825GB Digital Edition for a download-only library, or the $899.99 2TB PS5 Pro only if its enhanced graphics justify the premium. Verify your ZIP code, seller, condition, storage, drive, warranty, returns, and final checkout total before paying.
