To download games while your PS5 is in Rest Mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet at Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Then leave the console in Rest Mode—not fully turned off. You can start a download on the console or, for an eligible purchase, remotely through PlayStation App.
Enable internet access in Rest Mode
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Go to System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Use the power menu to put the PS5 in Rest Mode. Do not select Turn Off PS5; a fully powered-off console is not in Rest Mode.
Sony says that, while connected to the internet in Rest Mode, the console can download games bought on PlayStation App and pre-ordered games. See Sony’s Rest Mode power-saving settings.
Start a download on the console or remotely
At the PS5
Start or confirm the game download on the console, then leave the PS5 in Rest Mode with internet access enabled. Check the on-screen download queue to see its status.
From PlayStation App
Remote downloads are useful when you are away from the console. The PS5 must be paired with the app, signed in to the same account, connected to the internet in Rest Mode, and left in Rest Mode. In the app, open Game Library > Purchased, select the game, and tap Download. Sony says the app notifies you when the download completes. See Sony’s PlayStation App download instructions.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Set automatic updates separately
Automatic updates are different from starting a new game download. To configure them, first enable Rest Mode internet access, then go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. Choose Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode as appropriate.
If you want to keep a suspended game open, Sony recommends enabling Auto-Download without Auto-Install. The update can download in Rest Mode, and you can decide whether to install it after you resume the game. See Sony’s automatic update guidance.

Do not confuse downloads with network wake
Stay Connected to the Internet is the Rest Mode setting Sony identifies for downloads and updates. Enable Turning on PS5 from Network is separate: it allows the console to be turned on over a network through PlayStation App or Remote Play. Sony instructs users to enable both settings for Remote Play while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, but does not identify network wake as necessary just to continue an existing download. - Confirm that Stay Connected to the Internet is on and the PS5 is in Rest Mode rather than fully off.
- Check the console’s internet connection and on-screen download queue.
- If an automatic update requires approval or the issue persists, follow current PlayStation Support guidance; Sony directs users with update issues to PlayStation Repairs.
Sony’s support guidance does not promise a download completion time or provide a detailed sequence for every stalled-download cause, so check the console and current support instructions rather than assuming a particular fault.

Account for Rest Mode power use
Sony notes that enabling more Rest Mode features increases power consumption. Its cited guidance does not give a wattage estimate for this download configuration.
