If you buy nearly all your games as downloads, the PS5 Digital Edition can be the right fit—provided its capacity and price work for you. Both versions download digital games. The disc PS5 adds support for physical game discs, while storage expansion—not the presence of a disc drive—is the main way to keep more downloaded PS5 games installed and ready to play.
What differs between the PS5 Digital Edition and the disc PS5?
Both consoles support games downloaded from PlayStation Store. Sony describes the standard disc PS5 as supporting Blu-ray PS5 and PS4 games as well as digital downloads; the Digital Edition is all-digital. The disc drive is therefore about access to supported physical media, not a way to avoid downloading games you bought digitally.
Sony’s current US buying page lists the disc PS5 with 1 TB of storage and the Digital Edition with 825 GB. Those are the capacities listed for the models on that page, not a statement of usable free space. Check the listing for your region and exact hardware revision before buying; capacities should not be assumed to apply to every PS5 revision worldwide. Sony’s US PS5 buying page.
How much does the disc drive matter if you download games?
If you neither buy nor use physical games, the disc drive may add little value to your routine. The disc model still supports digital downloads, so choosing it does not mean you have to buy physical copies. Its advantage is flexibility if you already own supported discs or want to use physical games.

When a physical library changes the choice
Supported PS4 game discs can be played on a disc-drive PS5. Some may require an update, and the disc must remain inserted while you play. PS4 discs cannot be used on the Digital Edition. Check Sony’s PS4 backward-compatibility guidance for details.
Having a disc drive does not establish that every physical release avoids downloads, patches, or installation. Do not choose the disc model on the assumption that disc copies eliminate internet or download requirements.

Can you add a drive to a Digital Edition later?
Sony specifies a detachable disc drive for compatible slim Digital Edition groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, as well as PS5 Pro. Pairing requires an internet connection. Confirm your console’s model number and current accessory availability before buying the drive; it does not apply to every Digital Edition. Sony’s US disc-drive accessory page.
What is the best way to keep more downloaded PS5 games installed?
A compatible internal M.2 SSD is the clearest option when you want more PS5 games installed and ready to launch. Sony says M.2 storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. That makes it different from a USB drive used to archive PS5 titles.

M.2 SSD requirements
Sony’s current US guidance specifies an M.2 NVMe SSD with PCIe Gen4x4 and Key M, a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, and one of these supported sizes: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s and requires an effective heat-dissipation mechanism. Check the current guidance and the drive’s physical dimensions before purchase; meeting the speed recommendation alone does not guarantee compatibility or identical performance in every game.
Before installing or buying a drive, compare its full dimensions—including its heatsink—with Sony’s current requirements for your console. Sony warns that not every third-party drive is guaranteed to work. See Sony’s M.2 SSD installation and compatibility guidance.

What a USB extended-storage drive can—and cannot—do
A USB drive can hold PS5 games for storage, but PS5 titles on it must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD before you can play them. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. It can be useful as an archive or transfer option, but it does not keep PS5 games instantly playable from the USB drive. Compare the exact console revision and current local prices rather than assuming one model is always cheaper or has a particular storage advantage. Sony’s US page lists different capacities for the versions cited above, but console prices, bundles, and sales vary by market and date.
- Choose Digital Edition if you buy and play almost entirely through downloads, do not need physical discs, and find its listed capacity acceptable. If your installed library grows, consider a compatible M.2 SSD.
- Choose the disc PS5 if you own or expect to use supported PS5 or PS4 discs, or want the option of physical game media alongside downloads. It retains digital-game support.
- Compare the full cost by checking the current price difference, the capacity of the exact models on offer, and whether an M.2 SSD is part of your plan. Current street prices and install sizes for specific releases are not established here, so check them for the models and games you are considering.
- Decide whether USB archiving suits you: it can free console storage, but you will need to copy a PS5 game back to console or M.2 storage before playing it.
For a download-only buyer, Digital Edition is a sensible choice when it is meaningfully cheaper in your market and its capacity meets your needs. When prices are close, the disc PS5 adds physical-game flexibility without taking away digital downloads.
