Upgrade to a PS4 Pro if you want supported games to look sharper or use other Pro-specific enhancements, and you find a used console in suitable condition at a price that makes sense. Keep your standard PS4 if it meets your needs: both consoles play the same PS4 games, HDR works on both, and the Pro’s improvements vary by game. A 4K television is not required to benefit from every Pro feature.
What the PS4 Pro adds over a standard PS4
Sony describes the Pro as a higher-end PS4 with 4K output capability and additional power that developers can use to enhance games. That describes what the hardware can support, not a promise that every game renders at native 4K or runs at a higher frame rate. The result depends on each game’s implementation and the display you use. Sony’s PS4 Pro product page outlines the supported features.
Depending on the game, Pro enhancements can affect resolution, image quality, or performance. Because those choices are title-specific, check the games you actually play rather than expecting a uniform improvement across your library.
Do you need a 4K TV for PS4 Pro?
No. A 4K TV is needed to see a game’s 4K output as 4K, but Sony says some games can benefit from supersampling on an HD television. In that process, the Pro uses higher-resolution game information to produce a downscaled image that can have smoother edges and finer detail. The benefit depends on the game; it does not make an HD screen display 4K. Sony’s product page describes this feature.

If you are buying a television specifically for HDR games or movies, Sony recommends choosing an HDR10-compatible model. It does not give a universal screen-size recommendation because room size, viewing distance, and the media you watch all matter. Sony’s PS4 Pro FAQ explains that qualification.
Does PS4 Pro improve HDR or unlock different games?
HDR is available on both consoles
HDR support alone is not a reason to upgrade from a standard PS4: Sony says it is available on both models. In a November 2016 PlayStation Blog post, Sony put it plainly: “Best of all, HDR support is available on the standard PS4, as well as PS4 Pro.” Read Sony’s statement.

The PS4 game library is shared
PS4 Pro is not a way to access a separate set of Pro-exclusive PS4 games. Sony Interactive Entertainment said that owners of the Pro, slimmer PS4, or original PS4 have access to the same games and features. Choose the Pro for how supported games may look or perform, not for different PS4 game access. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s announcement describes the shared access.
How to decide whether an upgrade is worth it
- Consider the Pro if sharper output or a specific game’s Pro enhancements matter to you, whether you have a 4K TV or want to use supersampling on an HD display.
- Keep your PS4 if it runs the games you want and HDR is your only reason to upgrade. You retain access to the same PS4 library.
- Check your own games before deciding. Sony says many games have Pro enhancements, but the exact changes vary by title; do not assume every game gets a resolution or frame-rate boost.
- Compare the actual used console with your budget. Current resale prices, local availability, condition, included controller and cables, return coverage, and remaining service life are not established here, so verify them with the seller before buying.
Check settings if 4K or HDR is not appearing
A compatible television and console do not necessarily enable every feature automatically. Sony notes that some games also require 4K or HDR to be enabled in their own menus. Check the console’s display settings and the game’s settings; Sony’s PS4 Pro 4K and HDR setup guide provides step-by-step instructions.
