A PS4 database rebuild has no dependable, published completion time. Sony says it scans the drive and creates a new database of the console’s content, while PlayStation troubleshooting guidance says the process may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items. Your console may finish sooner or take longer than someone else’s; Sony does not guarantee a number of minutes or hours.
Why the rebuild time varies
The rebuild scans the PS4 drive and creates a new database of the content on the system. Sony does not publish a universal runtime, and the available troubleshooting guidance does not provide a formula for predicting one from storage capacity or another single factor.
Square Enix Support says the operation “may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items.” That explains why reports from other console owners are not a reliable deadline for yours. Square Enix Support’s PlayStation troubleshooting guidance
What to do while it is running
Do not use an arbitrary elapsed-time cutoff to decide that the rebuild is stuck, and do not unplug or power off the console simply because it has taken longer than expected. The reviewed guidance does not establish a safe cancellation threshold. If it appears stalled for an unusually long time, or the console repeatedly returns to Safe Mode, follow Sony’s support and repair diagnostics rather than guessing at a time limit.

What Rebuild Database does—and what it does not mean
Sony describes Rebuild Database as a Safe Mode option that scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. It may help with certain system-feature problems or when a deleted game’s icon remains on the Home screen. It is distinct from Initialize PS4, a separate option that deletes user data and restores the console.
Sony warns that some Safe Mode options can result in data loss. A rebuild is not the same action as initialization, but an existing drive or data problem can still put data at risk. If practical, back up important information before troubleshooting, especially if the console has already reported corruption.

Back up before troubleshooting when you can
A backup is prudent protection, not a prerequisite for selecting Rebuild Database. For a full PS4 backup, Sony specifies a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive with at least twice the storage space of the backup file. Sony also provides a method to copy saved data to USB storage:

How to start Rebuild Database in PS4 Safe Mode
- Turn the PS4 fully off.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep, which Sony says comes about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualShock 4 controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Select Rebuild Database. It is option 5 in Sony’s PS4 Safe Mode list.
See Sony’s current Safe Mode instructions for the official steps and menu details.

If the rebuild fails or Safe Mode keeps returning
A long rebuild by itself does not establish that the hard drive has failed. If problems persist, use Sony’s repair diagnostics. For some disc-reading issues, Sony lists Rebuild Database as a troubleshooting step; if that does not resolve the issue, its guidance lists Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) as a later escalation. Initialization deletes all console information, so back up first when possible and follow Sony’s current instructions rather than treating it as a routine next step.
