Choose PlayStation Portal if you own a PS5 and want a dedicated handheld with built-in, DualSense-style controls. Choose phone or tablet Remote Play if you already have a compatible device, need PS4 support, or want the option of using mobile data. Both methods stream games from your console, so neither removes network-related latency or guarantees a flawless session.
This guide compares compatibility, controls, networking, travel use, game restrictions, setup and accessories so you can make the decision based on how you actually play.

Quick answer: Portal or phone/tablet?
| Choose this | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Portal | PS5 owners who want a ready-to-use handheld with integrated physical controls, an 8-inch HD display and built-in audio options. | Works with PS5, not PS4; requires dependable Wi-Fi and a separate dedicated device. |
| Phone or tablet Remote Play | People who already own a supported mobile device, want PS4 as well as PS5 access, or value cellular-data flexibility. | Touch controls are optional but an external controller may be needed for comfortable play; data use can be substantial. |
| Either option | Players whose console, game and network meet Sony’s Remote Play requirements. | Image quality and responsiveness vary with the game and the connection. Neither device is a local, latency-free console. |
There is no universal winner. The deciding questions are whether you own a PS5 or PS4, whether you already have a suitable mobile screen, how much you value physical controls, and whether you regularly play away from home.

Remote Play sends the picture and sound generated by your PlayStation console to another screen and sends your control inputs back over the network. The console still runs the game. Portal and a mobile device are therefore clients for the same streaming session, not replacements for a PS5 or PS4.

You need a PlayStation account and a console connected to the internet. A game must be installed or otherwise available on that console, and the title must support Remote Play. Your experience depends on the route between the console and the client, local Wi-Fi quality, internet congestion, the mobile carrier when cellular data is used, and the game’s own requirements.
Sony’s Portal FAQ states that "The quality and connectivity of your play experience may vary depending on your network environment." Treat that as a practical limitation: changing hardware cannot fix a weak wireless signal, an overloaded router or a congested mobile connection.
Console compatibility: the biggest difference
Portal is a PS5 accessory
PlayStation Portal Remote Play connects to a PS5. It is not compatible with PS4. You must sign in with the same PlayStation account used by the console and enable Remote Play on that PS5.
Mobile Remote Play supports PS5 and PS4
The PS Remote Play app can connect to either a PS5 or a PS4. If you still use a PS4, a supported phone or tablet is the only one of these two approaches that can access it through Remote Play. Mobile also makes sense for households with both console generations when you want one client device.
Both still need a console
Neither Portal nor the mobile app plays a console game independently. A PS5 or PS4 must be powered on or configured for network wake from Rest Mode, connected to the internet and available to your account. Remote Play itself does not require a PlayStation Plus membership, although a particular game’s online multiplayer may require one.
Controls, screens and audio
Portal’s integrated controls
Portal has physical sticks, buttons and triggers designed to resemble the layout and functions of a DualSense controller. Its display is an 8-inch HD screen. The touch screen provides mapped touch-pad functions for games that use them, so you do not have to carry a separate controller or attach one to the screen.
For audio, Portal includes built-in speakers, a 3.5 mm jack for wired headphones or earbuds, and support for compatible PlayStation Link wireless devices such as PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite. Those are options, not prerequisites for Remote Play.

Touch controls on a phone or tablet
On-screen controls appear when you tap the mobile Remote Play display. They let you start without buying anything else, but virtual sticks and buttons occupy part of the image and may feel less precise for action, racing or competitive games.
Pairing a physical controller with mobile
You can pair supported PlayStation controllers with compatible mobile devices. Sony lists these baselines:

Network requirements and the connection that matters
Sony’s stated speeds
For Portal, Sony lists broadband Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps or more for a better experience. Sony’s mobile guidance recommends 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as a standard and at least 15 Mbps for best performance. These are Sony recommendations, not independent latency or image-quality benchmarks.
A speed-test result is only a snapshot. Stability, upload performance from the console, interference, packet loss and the route to your home all affect play. A fast plan can still feel poor if the console is connected through weak Wi-Fi or the client keeps roaming between access points.
Portal network setup
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- In Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network if you want Portal to wake the console.
- Connect the PS5 to your router by Ethernet where possible. A wired console link removes one wireless hop.
- Connect Portal to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. If the PS5 also uses Wi-Fi, place both devices on the same Wi-Fi network during setup.
- If band steering repeatedly moves Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and causes disconnects, Sony advises disabling band steering on the router.
- Sign in to Portal with the same PlayStation account as the PS5 and select the console when it appears.
Rest Mode wake-up only works when the two network settings in step two are enabled and the PS5 remains connected. If the console is fully powered off, Portal cannot start it remotely.
Mobile network setup
- Install Sony’s PS Remote Play app on a supported phone or tablet.
- Confirm that your PS5 or PS4 is updated, connected to the internet and signed in to the PlayStation account you will use on the mobile device.
- On the console, enable Remote Play. For a PS5, use Settings > System > Remote Play; PS4 has the equivalent Remote Play setting in its system menus.
- Open the app, sign in, choose PS5 or PS4, and follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
- Connect a DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense or other supported controller if you do not want to use touch controls.
- In the app’s mobile-data settings, allow cellular use only if your device, carrier and plan support it.
Exact menu wording can change with console software and app updates. If automatic discovery fails, verify that the console is online, the account matches and the phone has a stable connection before attempting manual pairing.
Can you use Remote Play away from home?
Yes. Remote Play is designed to connect over the internet, so the client does not have to be on your home network. Away from home, your phone or tablet can use Wi-Fi or, where supported, mobile data. Portal can also be used away from home when it has a suitable Wi-Fi connection and can reach the PS5.
Public Wi-Fi may require a sign-in page, block the traffic Remote Play needs or fluctuate when many people share it. A phone or tablet has the additional option of cellular data; Portal does not contain a cellular modem, so it needs Wi-Fi or a hotspot that provides Wi-Fi.
Mobile-data costs and limits
Sony says, "Remote Play uses a lot more data than most video streaming services." The exact amount varies with resolution, frame rate, session length and network conditions, so do not assume that a normal video-streaming allowance will cover frequent play. Check your carrier’s data cap, throttling policy and hotspot rules before using Remote Play on cellular data.
Mobile data is therefore a flexibility advantage, not a free performance upgrade. A weak or congested cellular signal can add delay and image changes, and exceeding a cap may create charges or reduce your connection speed.

Game and feature compatibility
Most games that can be controlled with supported PlayStation input devices can be used through Remote Play, but there are important exclusions.
Recommended Free Tools
- Games requiring a PlayStation VR headset cannot be played through Remote Play.
- Games requiring additional peripherals beyond supported PlayStation controllers are excluded.
- Titles that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium cloud-streaming membership are not available through Remote Play.
- Remote Play itself does not require PlayStation Plus, but online multiplayer in a specific game may require the relevant membership.
Portal’s touch screen maps touch-pad functions, but it does not add support for a peripheral the game requires. On mobile, controller features can also be reduced compared with using the controller directly with a console.
Performance: do not expect one device to win every time
Portal and phone/tablet Remote Play use the same basic streaming path: console to network to client, then your input back to the console. Sony does not publish an across-the-board latency or image-quality winner, and no independent hands-on measurements establish one here.
Portal’s physical controls can make a session feel more consistent than touch controls because your fingers stay on familiar buttons and sticks. That is an ergonomics benefit, not proof of lower network latency. A phone with a good controller and a strong Wi-Fi connection can feel excellent; Portal on a congested network can still stutter or disconnect.
When diagnosing poor play, separate these symptoms:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Input delay: often linked to network round-trip time, congestion or a busy Wi-Fi channel.
- Blocky or soft video: commonly caused by insufficient or fluctuating bandwidth.
- Frozen image or disconnect: may indicate signal loss, router roaming, console sleep or a mobile-data drop.
- Missing button or feature: may be a game, controller or mobile-operating-system compatibility issue rather than a bandwidth problem.
Which option fits common player profiles?
Buy or choose Portal when
- You own a PS5 and want a device that is always ready with physical controls.
- You mainly play Remote Play-compatible games and do not need PS4 access.
- You have reliable 5 GHz Wi-Fi and can position the console and client sensibly.
- You prefer a larger dedicated screen over holding a phone or tablet and attaching a controller.
- You want built-in options for speakers, wired audio or PlayStation Link audio without assembling a mobile setup.
Use a phone or tablet when
- You already own a supported Android or iOS device and want to avoid another screen purchase.
- You need to connect to a PS4 as well as a PS5.
- You want the choice of home Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi or mobile data, subject to carrier support and data limits.
- You play occasionally and can accept touch controls or already own a compatible controller.
- You want to use a larger tablet display for turn-based, strategy or slower-paced games.
Choose based on the game, not just the hardware
For games that rely on precise sticks, triggers or frequent touch-pad actions, Portal’s integrated controls are the simpler starting point. For a game that needs VR or an un supported peripheral, neither choice solves the compatibility problem. Check the game’s input and membership requirements before planning a long Remote Play session.
Accessories: what is optional
Portal already includes its control hardware, so you do not need to buy a separate controller for it. Wired 3.5 mm headphones, Portal’s speakers and compatible PlayStation Link earbuds or headsets are audio choices rather than requirements.
With a phone or tablet, an external controller is optional. Touch controls cost nothing but use screen space and may be less comfortable. A paired DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 or compatible mobile controller can improve ergonomics, while a grip or stand can make a tablet easier to hold. Confirm operating-system compatibility before purchasing.
No current retail price, promotion or commission is established in the official material used for this comparison, so treat price as a separate shopping decision and verify the live cost in your region.
Troubleshooting decision tree
Portal cannot find or wake the PS5
- Confirm both devices use the same PlayStation account.
- Check that Remote Play is enabled on the PS5.
- If waking from Rest Mode, verify both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Make sure the PS5 is online and not fully powered off.
- Temporarily place Portal and the PS5 on the same Wi-Fi network and retry.
Video is blurry or keeps changing quality
- Move Portal or the mobile device closer to the Wi-Fi access point.
- Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal and reduce competing traffic on the network.
- Use Ethernet for the PS5 if possible.
- On mobile data, check signal strength, carrier throttling and remaining allowance.
- Stop downloads or streams that consume upload or download capacity.
Controls do not work as expected
- Check whether the game requires VR or another unsupported peripheral.
- On mobile, confirm the operating-system version and controller pairing requirements.
- Reconnect the controller and reopen the Remote Play app.
- Remember that some DualSense haptics and audio features are unavailable or reduced on mobile.
Decision checklist
- Console: PS5 only points toward Portal; PS4 support points toward mobile.
- Screen: no spare screen points toward Portal; an existing compatible phone or tablet favors mobile.
- Controls: integrated physical controls favor Portal; occasional play may be fine with touch controls.
- Connectivity: stable home Wi-Fi favors either option; mobile-data travel favors a phone or tablet.
- Data plan: a strict cap makes cellular Remote Play risky; Wi-Fi remains the safer default.
- Games: exclude VR, unsupported-peripheral and Premium cloud-streaming titles before choosing.
- Accessories: Portal needs no separate game controller; mobile may be more comfortable with one.
If most answers point to the left side, Portal is the straightforward PS5 handheld. If most point to the right, use the mobile app and add a controller only if touch input does not suit your games.
