After a PlayStation Portal system update, first confirm the version installed on the device, then read the release notes for that version and revisit the settings that affect audio, charging, network performance, controls and Remote Play. The update does not change the PS5-side requirements for Remote Play, so check those separately if connection or streaming quality changed.
1. Confirm which system software is actually installed
Do not rely only on a regional support page or on the update notification. Sony can publish different release-note pages by region, and the Portal may still be waiting for an intermediate update. Check the device itself.
- Swipe left from the upper-right edge of the Portal screen to open Quick Menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open System > System Software.
- Select Device Information and record the installed version.
That version number is the reference for deciding which changes apply to your Portal. It also gives PlayStation Support a precise starting point if an update fails or a setting is missing.
Install any offered update safely
- From Settings > System > System Software, choose Update System Software.
- Keep the Portal connected to a stable, high-speed Wi-Fi network.
- Make sure the battery has sufficient charge before starting.
- Leave the Portal powered on and do not interrupt the installation.
Sony Interactive Entertainment strongly recommends installing the latest update as soon as possible after release. Use only official update files and documented methods; unofficial files or procedures can create update problems. If the process reports an error, check Device Information again and contact PlayStation Support with the displayed version and error details.

Why more than one update may appear
A Portal that has not been updated for some time may need several updates in sequence. Sony’s update history explains that an older starting version can require intermediate releases before later updates can be installed in one step. That behavior is normal; allow each offered installation to finish rather than assuming the first download is the final version.
2. Match the device with the correct release notes
Once you know the installed version, read the release notes for that version and your regional PlayStation support site. At one point, Sony’s Croatia page listed version 7.3.0 while the US page listed version 7.0.2. Those pages are not evidence that every Portal worldwide runs the same release. Regional publication timing, staged availability and account or device differences can all affect what you see.

If a feature described in notes is absent, first verify the installed version and regional page. Do not reset the Portal or change PS5 settings solely because another country’s page lists a newer feature.

3. Revisit the settings most likely to change your experience
3D Audio
Release notes for version 7.3.0 describe a 3D Audio toggle that can be changed while playing a game. Open Settings > System > 3D Audio and choose whether it is on or off for your listening setup. If you alternate between speakers, wired headphones and a PlayStation Link device, test the setting in an actual game rather than assuming the previous choice still suits every output.
Battery charge limit
Version 7.1.7 notes describe an 80% default charge limit under Settings > System > Battery. The limit can be changed on versions that expose the control, but Sony warns that selecting a limit above 80% might affect battery performance and overall stability and can reduce long-term battery health. The exact interface and availability are version-dependent, so use the control shown on your Portal rather than treating 80% as a universal setting on every release.
Network and connection status
Open the network settings after an update and verify that the Portal is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. Sony recommends a stable high-speed connection, 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal and, where possible, a wired Ethernet connection for the PS5. Its guidance recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience; that is a recommendation, not a guarantee of a particular latency, resolution or image quality.

- Confirm the network name and connection status shown on the Portal.
- Prefer 5 GHz when the Portal is close enough to the router for a reliable signal.
- Place the PS5 on wired Ethernet when practical.
- If the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, connect the PS5 and Portal to the same network when you are at home.
- Treat public Wi-Fi as variable: congestion, sign-in portals and network restrictions may be outside your control.
Display, brightness and controller feedback
Use the display and controller sections to restore personal preferences that may have changed or become noticeable after the update. Review brightness, the light bar, the mute indicator, vibration and trigger-effect intensity. Lowering brightness and feedback can reduce distractions and may help battery endurance, while higher settings improve visibility or tactile feedback in some games. Choose settings based on where you play rather than copying a single recommended value.
PS Link Device
If a PlayStation Link device is paired, open Settings > PS Link Device. The available controls include volume, equalizer, microphone mute and reset. Check the selected output and microphone mute state before troubleshooting a game or chat application; a muted indicator or changed output can look like a hardware failure.
Cloud Streaming
Cloud-streaming information and related accessibility options appear only for adult accounts in regions where PlayStation Plus Premium is available. If you do not see those menus, verify the account age classification and regional service availability before treating their absence as an update defect.

4. Check PS5 settings when Remote Play is affected
An update to the Portal does not replace the PS5 configuration required for Remote Play. The PS5 must be online, signed in with the same account used on the Portal, updated to current system software and configured to allow Remote Play.
Enable Remote Play on the PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet and signed in with the same PlayStation account as the Portal.
Allow wake-up from rest mode
If you expect to start Remote Play while the PS5 is sleeping, configure both rest-mode options:
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Enable Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
Both switches matter. Enabling only one can leave the console unable to wake for a Portal connection.

Diagnose a connection that drops or looks poor
- Check the Portal’s Wi-Fi status and reconnect to the intended network if necessary.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal when signal strength is adequate.
- Connect the PS5 by Ethernet where possible. If it uses Wi-Fi, place both devices on the same network for local Remote Play.
- Run a connection test and compare the result with Sony’s at-least-15 Mbps recommendation.
- Remember that the recommendation does not promise a fixed latency or picture quality; interference, distance, router load and public-network policies still matter.
If the Portal can connect but gameplay remains unstable, test near the router, pause heavy downloads on the network and compare wired and wireless PS5 connections. Those steps isolate network conditions from a Portal software setting without changing account data or resetting the device.
5. Keep charging and cables within Sony’s requirements
The Portal should have enough battery before an update starts, and it must not be turned off during installation. The included Portal or PS5 cable is the safest default. If you use another USB-C cable, Sony says it should comply with USB standards and warns that not all cables function properly.
For a USB Power Delivery AC adapter, Sony’s CFI-Y1001 instruction manual states a minimum output of 5 V/3 A with a USB-C output. The Portal already includes a cable, so purchasing another one is not required to update the system or inspect settings. Use a replacement only when the original is unavailable or damaged, and stop if charging repeatedly disconnects during an update.

Work through this list after every successful installation or after a long gap between updates:
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Device Information and note the version.
- Read the release notes for that version on your regional PlayStation support site.
- Check System > 3D Audio if your release includes the 3D Audio control.
- Check System > Battery and confirm the charge-limit behavior shown on your device.
- Verify Wi-Fi network, signal and connection status; prefer 5 GHz for the Portal.
- Restore brightness, light-bar, mute-indicator, vibration and trigger-effect preferences.
- Review PS Link volume, equalizer, microphone mute and reset controls if a Link device is connected.
- Confirm cloud-streaming and accessibility menus only if you use an adult account in a PlayStation Plus Premium region.
- On the PS5, verify Remote Play, account sign-in, internet access and rest-mode wake settings.
- Run a short Remote Play session before relying on the Portal away from home.
Keeping the installed version, regional notes and PS5 configuration aligned is the reliable way to tell a genuine software change from a network problem or a preference that simply needs to be restored.
