Choose KVM/QEMU when a workload needs Windows, its own guest operating system and kernel, or a virtual machine with virtualized hardware. Choose LXC for a Linux service that can share the Proxmox host’s kernel and fits an isolated container environment. Proxmox VE supports both, so you can use the right type for each workload rather than forcing every service into one model.
What is the difference between LXC and KVM?
KVM/QEMU provides full virtualization: a guest runs its own operating system on virtualized hardware, including devices such as storage and networking. Proxmox documents Linux and Windows as guest operating systems and describes KVM as offering near-native performance on supported x86 hardware with Intel VT-x or AMD-V. That is the vendor’s characterization, not a promise about every workload.
LXC provides operating-system-level virtualization for Linux. A container has an isolated environment for a system or application, but shares the host’s Linux kernel. It is therefore not a small independent computer with its own kernel.

Its installation includes support for both KVM and containers. The Proxmox VE features page describes KVM as full virtualization and containers as a lightweight alternative because they share the host kernel.

Which one should you choose?
| Requirement | Choose KVM/QEMU when… | Choose LXC when… |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | The guest needs Windows, a distinct Linux environment, or another operating system with its own kernel. | The workload is Linux and can use the host’s Linux kernel. |
| Environment | You need a full virtual machine with virtualized hardware. | An isolated container environment is sufficient for the Linux service. |
| Kernel compatibility | The guest requires a kernel version or kernel configuration independent of the host. | Sharing the host kernel is acceptable. |
| Virtualization overhead | A full VM is appropriate even if a container might be lighter. | You want the lightweight container model for compatible Linux services. |
| Mixed workloads | Some workloads require a VM. | Other workloads can use containers; Proxmox manages both types on one platform. |
This is an architecture-based decision aid, not a benchmark or a security certification. A practical setup can combine both: run kernel-dependent or Windows workloads in VMs and compatible Linux services in containers.
How isolation and security affect the choice
An LXC container shares the host kernel; a KVM guest runs its own operating system on virtualized hardware. If an independent guest kernel or stronger separation is a firm requirement, that points toward KVM. It does not amount to an absolute security guarantee. Security also depends on the threat model, configuration, patch level, and other safeguards. Proxmox’s product materials do not provide a quantitative comparison of escape risk between LXC and KVM.

Is LXC faster than KVM?
There is no universal number established by the Proxmox sources for how much faster one is than the other. Proxmox characterizes containers as lightweight and KVM as capable of near-native performance, but those descriptions are not a head-to-head measurement for your application. Results depend on the workload, I/O pattern, kernel requirements, resource limits, and configuration. If performance is decisive, compare both with the actual service under controlled conditions rather than relying on a general percentage or RAM claim.
What should you check before creating a guest?
- Operating system: Does the service require Windows or an operating system other than the Linux host environment? Use a VM if it does.
- Kernel needs: Does it require a kernel module, a different kernel version, or kernel settings that cannot be supplied by the host? That favors KVM.
- Device needs: Does it depend on a special device or hardware access that affects the guest design? Verify the requirement and the relevant Proxmox documentation before choosing.
- Isolation needs: Is sharing the host kernel acceptable for the workload’s threat model? If not, select a VM and configure appropriate safeguards.
- Resource and performance goals: Test the service with the intended limits and I/O pattern. The architecture alone does not establish a guaranteed speed or memory advantage.
Managing both in Proxmox VE
Proxmox provides a central web interface, with functionality also available through the command line and REST API. Its platform supports clustering and documents migration for virtual machines and containers. Migration behavior depends on the Proxmox release and configuration, so consult the documentation matching your installed version before making a production change.
