Proton announced Proton Authenticator on July 31, 2025, as a free standalone app for generating two-factor authentication (2FA) codes. Proton lists versions for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux, and says a Proton Account is not required to use the app. Its published feature descriptions include offline code access, encrypted sync, backups, and code import and export.
What Proton Authenticator does—and where it’s available
Proton Authenticator generates time-based 2FA codes used when signing in to accounts that require an authenticator code. Proton’s July 31, 2025 launch announcement described the app as available on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux. Proton’s current download page continues to list those platforms and also points Android users to F-Droid. Availability and distribution options can change, so check Proton’s download page for current links.
Proton says the app can generate codes offline, sync codes between devices with end-to-end encryption, create automatic backups, import codes from other authenticator apps, and export codes from Proton Authenticator. It also describes app access protected by biometrics or a PIN. These are Proton’s product and security descriptions; they should not be read as independent verification or audit results.
Is Proton Authenticator free, and do you need an account?
Proton’s current support FAQ says Proton Authenticator is free on all platforms, without ads or tracking, and can be used without a Proton Account. Account requirements differ for some sync and backup arrangements: Proton describes iCloud sync for Apple devices and Proton Account sync for Windows, Linux, or Android. Its backup details are also platform-dependent; Proton says encrypted backups are supported when using a Proton Account or on iOS. Consult Proton’s support FAQ for the current options for your device.

How to move your 2FA codes into Proton Authenticator
Proton lists imports from Google Authenticator, 2FAS, Aegis Authenticator, Bitwarden Authenticator, Ente Auth, and LastPass Authenticator. Its onboarding guidance uses a two-stage transfer: export codes from the old app, then import them into Proton Authenticator. The exact export steps depend on the source app, so follow that app’s current instructions rather than assuming every app works the same way.
- Prepare a safe transfer. Check that you can still open your existing authenticator and identify its export option. An exported file or transfer secret may expose the codes it contains; keep it private and avoid leaving an unprotected copy behind.
- Export from the old app. Use the source app’s own export process. Proton’s guidance does not establish one universal export file format for all supported apps.
- Import into Proton Authenticator. Follow the in-app import flow and select the export from your previous app.
- Verify before removing the old copy. Check that the expected accounts appear and that their codes work at sign-in. Retain a secure backup or a way to export your codes so a lost device or future move does not leave you without access.
Proton also says users can export codes from Proton Authenticator, which can help if they later switch apps. Treat that export as sensitive for the same reason as the source export.

Proton Authenticator or Proton Pass?
Proton Pass already includes an authenticator feature. In its launch announcement, Proton framed Pass as the convenient choice for autofilling passwords and 2FA codes together, while positioning Proton Authenticator as a separate app for people who prefer to keep code generation distinct from password management. The practical choice depends on whether you value a combined sign-in workflow or prefer separate apps, and on which sync setup works for your devices. Proton’s framing alone does not establish that either arrangement is categorically safer.

Plan a recovery path before relying on any authenticator app. Proton describes sync and backup options, but their availability depends on platform and account setup. If you change devices, use the applicable sync or backup option, or export the codes from the old app and import them to the new one. Keep the old device or app available until you have confirmed your codes work on the replacement; for account access problems, use each service’s recovery methods as well.
