To protect your main inbox when signing up for a website, give it a separate email alias that forwards to your real inbox. The site gets the alias, not your primary address, and you can often disable or delete that address if it starts receiving unwanted mail. For accounts you may need to recover or use later, choose a persistent, manageable alias—not a temporary inbox that may disappear.
What a throwaway email service does—and what it does not
An email alias is a separate address that forwards incoming messages to an inbox you already use. When you enter the alias on a website, that website has the alias as your contact address rather than your primary email. Mozilla, Proton, and Apple each document versions of this forwarding model (Mozilla; Proton; Apple).
In this context, “throwaway” is most useful as a separate address you can control. A short-lived inbox may be unsuitable for an account that sends password-reset links, receipts, or other messages you will need later. An alias can reduce direct exposure of your primary address, but it does not guarantee anonymity, stop all spam or phishing, or protect an account with a weak or reused password.

Choose an alias workflow that fits your accounts
The providers below offer different ways to create and manage aliases. Limits and plan names can change, so check each provider’s current terms before relying on a specific allowance.
#1 Best Overall
| Service | Where aliases fit | Limits stated in the cited materials | Controls and replies | Message handling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox Relay | Mozilla email masks can be generated or reused through Relay; Mozilla also documents password-manager integration. | Mozilla’s mask overview states five free masks and unlimited masks for Premium. Confirm the current allowance and plan details with Mozilla Support. | Mozilla’s help materials describe managing masks and disabling forwarding. Check the service’s current reply options before using a mask for ongoing correspondence. | The cited materials establish forwarding and mask controls; they do not establish a directly comparable retention statement here. |
| Proton Pass / SimpleLogin | Aliases integrate with Proton Pass and Proton Mail workflows. | Proton Support states up to 10 aliases on Proton Free and Mail Plus, and unlimited aliases on Pass Plus or Proton Unlimited. Verify current plan names and limits in Proton Support. | Proton says aliases forward incoming mail and support replies sent from the alias. Review its instructions for creating aliases in Proton Mail and current sender restrictions. | Proton’s privacy policy says hide-my-email aliases relay email and do not store emails; it also says some functionality is hosted on European cloud servers through its wholly owned subsidiary SimpleLogin SAS (Proton privacy policy). |
| Apple Hide My Email | Sign in with Apple can create a unique random address for an app or website. iCloud+ also enables Hide My Email in supported Safari workflows. | The cited Apple materials do not state a comparable numeric alias limit. | For Sign in with Apple, the generated address is associated with that app or website. Review Apple’s guidance for the relevant workflow: Sign in with Apple and Hide My Email in Safari. | Apple says, “All email messages are deleted from our relay servers after they’re delivered, usually within seconds.” This describes Apple’s Hide My Email relay, not other services (Apple Support). |
Check these details before using an alias for an important account
- Can you keep the address? Confirm that the alias will remain available for as long as you expect to use the account, and that you can turn forwarding off or delete the address if needed.
- Can you reply from it? If you expect a two-way conversation, confirm that replies can be sent using the alias. Also check whether messages can be received only from certain senders.
- What happens to relayed messages? Read the provider’s statement on message storage and handling; policies differ, and one provider’s retention practice should not be assumed to apply to another.
- Can you find the alias later? Keep track of which alias belongs to which account, especially if you manage many addresses or may need account recovery.
- Will delivery work for this account? If the site rejects an alias or its messages do not arrive, use the provider’s troubleshooting guidance or choose another address you control. Apple’s developer notice identifies
private.icloud.comas a newer relay domain and advises email providers to update domain-based filtering, suppression, and routing rules; that notice is aimed at service operators, not a consumer setup step (Apple Developer).
Use aliases as one layer of inbox protection
Use a distinct, controllable alias when a site does not need your primary address, particularly for accounts that may send future messages. If you need dependable recovery or ongoing correspondence, avoid relying on an inbox that can expire before you need it. An alias limits which address the site receives; it is not a substitute for a strong, unique password or other account-security protections.
