Props are the values a parent component supplies to a child through JSX. A function component receives them as an object, then uses the properties it needs to render. They let a parent customize a component without changing the child’s code.
What are props in React?
Props are component inputs, usually passed by a parent on a JSX tag. They can hold strings, numbers, objects, arrays, functions, or JSX. React describes props as similar to function arguments: the parent supplies values, and the child uses them to determine what to render. See React’s guide to passing props and Thinking in React.
How do I pass props to a component?
Write each value as an attribute on the component’s JSX tag. In this example, Profile supplies a person object and a size value to Avatar:

}The parent writes the values in <Avatar ... />; the child receives them in its function parameter. Curly braces let JSX evaluate JavaScript expressions, such as an object or a variable, rather than treating the value as plain text.

How do I access props in a function component?
A function component receives one props object. Destructuring in the parameter, as in function Avatar({ person, size }), is convenient shorthand for reading its person and size properties. Destructuring is JavaScript syntax, not special React behavior. You can instead name the object and access properties explicitly:

}How do default props work in a function component?
A default in a destructured parameter supplies a value when the prop is omitted or is undefined. In the first example, size = 100 is used if the caller does not provide a size. It does not replace null or 0: those are explicit values, so the component receives them as given.

What is children in React?
When you nest JSX inside a component’s opening and closing tags, React passes that nested content to the component as the children prop. This lets wrapper components such as cards and panels provide a frame while callers choose the content:

}Here, the heading and paragraph become Panel’s children. This kind of composition can be clearer than forwarding many individual props through wrapper components. JSX spread syntax, such as <Avatar {...props} />, can forward a group of props, but if every layer only passes values along, consider whether nesting content with children better expresses the structure. How are props different from state and context?
| Concept | Where the value comes from | When it fits |

| State | A component’s own changing memory. | Use it for information the component updates through interaction; a parent can also hold state and pass its current value to a child as a prop. |
| Context | An ancestor makes a value available to descendants. | Consider it when many descendants need the same value or explicit forwarding through components that do not use it becomes cumbersome. |
Props are read-only snapshots for a particular render. A child should not change its props; when a value changes, the parent supplies a new value on a subsequent render. React explains the props-and-state distinction in Thinking in React and its Rules of React.
Start with props when they make the parent-to-child data flow clear. Context is a situational alternative for information shared across many layers, not a replacement for ordinary props everywhere. React’s context guide explains when passing data deeply can become verbose.
