Project Bike Leg is a prosthetic-leg design developed by prosthetist Ben Hogan using recycled bicycle components. Its aim is to make some materials easier to source in places where conventional prosthetic supplies and specialist resources are scarce. The project shares instructional videos, but available reporting describes a developing design—not a clinically validated, ready-to-use substitute for a professionally fitted prosthesis.
What is Project Bike Leg?
Project Bike Leg is Hogan’s initiative to build a lower-limb prosthesis from bicycle parts. The 2025 Living with Amplitude feature says Hogan first sketched the idea after encountering an earlier account of a prosthesis made from bicycle components. He returned to it after gaining experience as a prosthetist and refined the design by late 2024.
Hogan described the goal this way: “I wanted to see if I could make a feasible, lightweight, functional and adjustable prosthesis that people could assemble with materials they already had on hand, no matter where they were.” That is the project’s stated ambition; it is not evidence that the design has been shown to meet those criteria in clinical use.

Why build a prosthetic leg from bicycle parts?
The idea responds to a practical access problem: conventional prostheses can depend on specialized components, skilled fitting, and supply chains that may be difficult to reach in some communities. Bicycle parts may be more readily available locally, and Hogan’s project shares videos to show how its design is made.

- Package Content: You will receive 8 pieces of prosthetic liner patches, enough to meet your daily needs, providing you with uninterrupted comfort and activity support.
- Comfortable Material: Made of good-quality gel, these patches are soft, resilient, washable and reusable, and you can also cut them according to your needs.
- Perfect Fit: Each 2.6in prosthetic leg pad is ergonomically designed to fit the contours of your limb and give you lasting comfort.
- Friction Relief: These patches are designed for lower limb amputees who experience skin irritation and pain caused by friction. Our gel prosthetic pads provide comfort and enhance mobility for your legs.
- Cushioning Shock Absorption: The prosthetic liner patch can absorb the impact on the limb during walking or exercise, while providing excellent cushioning and shock absorption to protect your residual limb.
In the Living with Amplitude feature, Hogan said, “Close to 90 percent of amputees worldwide don’t have access to a leg.” That figure is Hogan’s estimate as quoted in the 2025 feature; the feature does not identify the underlying dataset, so it should not be treated as an independently verified global statistic.
What do the reports say has been built?
A feature published by Living with Amplitude reports that University of Michigan engineering students made a version after watching a tutorial. A separate local report describes fabrication tools including drills, saws, sanders, hammers, and grinders. These accounts establish that a version was built and describe some of the tools involved; they do not supply a complete bill of materials or a validated clinical build protocol.

- Provides static dorsiflexion assistance and lateral stability for foot-ankle area
- Injection molding allows for thicker polypropylene
- Thinner footplate that may be trimmed with a pair of ordinary scissors

Is the design available for free, and is it ready to use?
The 2025 feature reports that Project Bike Leg shares instructional videos. That supports describing the project’s instructional content as shared, but the reporting does not establish a complete, clinically validated set of construction instructions or a tested, ready-to-use medical device. Access to a video is not the same as proof that a build is safe, correctly fitted, or appropriate for a particular person.
For the same reason, the design should not be treated as clinically equivalent to a professionally fitted prosthesis. The available accounts do not report an independent safety evaluation, clinical trial, measured patient outcomes, or product certification. They also do not establish broad deployment.

What happens next?
The feature says Hogan hopes to pursue pilots and clinic partnerships, including a planned pilot involving at least 100 devices. That is a future goal in the reporting, not a completed program or a report of results. It also says a proposal was accepted for presentation at the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics’ 2025 conference; acceptance to present is not clinical endorsement or product certification.
Whether a bicycle-parts design can work reliably beyond a prototype depends on questions the reports do not answer: how well it can be fitted and adjusted for different users, how it holds up under use, whether local parts can be repaired or replaced, and what outcomes users experience. Those are important evaluation criteria, not demonstrated advantages of Project Bike Leg.
