Progressive image decoding can help a page show surrounding content without waiting for an image to be decoded, but it does not make the image download or decode faster. Use decoding="async" selectively when earlier rendering of nearby content matters; for JavaScript-driven image swaps, wait for HTMLImageElement.decode() before revealing the new image.
What progressive image decoding does—and does not do
The HTML decoding attribute is a browser scheduling hint. It influences how image decoding is coordinated with rendering; it does not prioritize the image request, defer its download, or reduce the amount of image data. The available values are sync, async, and auto. MDN’s HTMLImageElement decoding documentation notes that the effect can be subtle on static images and more apparent when JavaScript inserts or swaps images.
With async, the browser may render other content before presenting the image. This can avoid making an unrelated paint wait for image decoding, but it is not a guaranteed speedup, and no universal improvement percentage is established. Decoding still takes time; the hint changes presentation scheduling rather than the underlying work.
Choose the right approach for each image

For static markup, start with auto and measure before applying async broadly. Consider async when surrounding content should be able to paint first. For a dynamic transition where revealing an undecoded image could cause a blank or incomplete state, use decode() and reveal it after the promise resolves.

Use decoding=”async” in HTML
Apply the hint to the individual image for which asynchronous presentation makes sense:

Keep the real width and height, or reserve equivalent space with layout, so the browser can allocate room before the image appears. If the image is important immediately—especially a likely initial-viewport or Largest Contentful Paint image—do not add loading="lazy" as a blanket optimization. Lazy loading controls when offscreen images are fetched; it is separate from decoding.
Wait for an image to decode before showing it
When JavaScript creates or swaps an image, set its source, await decode(), and only then replace the visible content. Keep the existing image or a fallback in place if loading or decoding fails.

The promise rejects if the image cannot be loaded or decoded, so handle that failure rather than removing the current content first. If you need visible error feedback, put it in the catch block while preserving an appropriate fallback. This pattern coordinates a specific image reveal without requiring unrelated content paints to wait.
Improve the parts decoding cannot fix
Image performance has separate bottlenecks. Address each with the mechanism that controls it:

- Too much data to transfer: serve appropriately sized, compressed files and use responsive image sources so the browser can choose a suitable asset for the viewport and device.
- Offscreen images fetched too early: use
loading="lazy"for images that are not initially needed. Avoid lazy-loading a likely initial-viewport or LCP image by default. - An important request needs relative priority: use fetch priority to influence its importance relative to other requests. This affects fetching, not decode scheduling.
- Layout jumps while an image loads: provide dimensions or otherwise reserve the intended space. This improves layout stability rather than decoding speed.
- Nearby content waits on image presentation: consider
decoding="async"where the browser can paint that content first. - A scripted image swap risks a blank transition: await
decode()before inserting or revealing the replacement.
These techniques can be combined, but none substitutes for the others: decoding scheduling cannot compensate for an unnecessarily large download, and lazy loading does not make a required visible image arrive sooner.
Measure before making a blanket change
There is no established universal numeric gain from adding decoding="async". Compare the page with and without the hint in the browsers and workloads that matter to your site. Pay particular attention to whether surrounding content paints sooner, whether the image itself appears at the right moment, and whether layout remains stable. Static images may show little visible difference; dynamic insertion and swapping are more likely to make scheduling choices noticeable.

The image still appears slowly
decoding="async" does not speed up fetching, decode work, or image delivery. Check file dimensions and compression, responsive source selection, and whether the request is appropriately prioritized. Use lazy loading only when the image is genuinely offscreen and not needed immediately.

The image flashes blank during an update
Do not clear the old image before the replacement is ready. Create the new image separately, await decode(), and then swap it into the page. Preserve the old image or a fallback if the promise rejects.
The page shifts when an image loads
Reserve the image’s intended dimensions in markup or layout. A decoding hint does not reserve space and does not prevent layout shifts.
The hint seems to have no effect
That can be expected, especially for static markup: the browser treats decoding as a hint, and the visible effect depends on workload and browser scheduling. Keep auto where you cannot identify a rendering problem the hint should address, and assess dynamic cases separately.
