There is no single best programming language for every software tester. Choose the language that fits the work you want to automate, the tools your team uses, and the coding skills you want to build. For broad coding foundations and reusable test utilities, Python is a reasonable starting point. For browser testing with Playwright or Cypress, JavaScript or TypeScript is a strong fit. If your team already has a Selenium stack, start with its language—often Java or C#—so you can work in the same ecosystem.
Choose a language by the testing work you want to do
Before comparing syntax, identify your target: browser-based end-to-end tests, automation for a particular application, or general-purpose scripts and utilities. Then check which language and test runner your team can support. A language is most useful when you can apply it to the system you need to test and collaborate with the people who maintain that system.
- Team stack: An established automation project is a practical reason to learn the language it already uses.
- Test target and type: Browser automation, API checks, and small utilities may lead to different language choices.
- Framework and runner: Check not only whether a tool supports a language, but also how tests are organized and run in that language.
- Your experience and goal: A beginner seeking general coding foundations may prioritize differently from someone who needs to contribute to a specific test suite now.
Playwright’s guidance is to choose based on experience, familiarity with the testing ecosystem, and project constraints. Its core browser automation features are supported across its language options, but integrations differ. Playwright’s supported languages documentation explains those routes.
How the main language choices compare
| Language | Good fit when | Relevant tool and runner examples |
|---|---|---|
| Python | You want general coding foundations, reusable utilities, or tests that are not tied to one tool. | Playwright recommends its Pytest plugin for Python end-to-end tests. AT*SQA also lists Python for tool-independent tests. |
| JavaScript or TypeScript | Your immediate goal is browser-facing web testing, especially with Playwright or Cypress. | Playwright for Node.js has Playwright Test, its own runner. AT*SQA lists JavaScript with Playwright and Cypress. |
| Java | Your organization uses Java automation, or you want to write Playwright tests in Java. | AT*SQA lists Java with Selenium WebDriver and JUnit. Playwright documents JUnit or TestNG integrations. |
| C# / .NET | Your team’s Selenium suite uses C#, or your Playwright tests are in .NET. | AT*SQA lists C# with Selenium WebDriver. Playwright documents MSTest, NUnit, xUnit, and xUnit v3 integrations. |
| Ruby | Your team’s existing automation uses Ruby or you have a specific reason to use it. | AT*SQA lists Ruby for tool-independent tests and notes it can also be used with Selenium WebDriver. The cited Playwright language page does not list Ruby. |
These are practical examples, not an exhaustive list of what can be used to test software. Tool-language pairings here follow Playwright’s documentation and AT*SQA’s Test Automation Transitions Micro-Credential; they do not establish that one language is universally more effective.

Which language should a beginner learn first?
Choose Python for broader coding practice
If you do not have a team stack to follow and want general-purpose coding foundations plus test utilities, Python is a reasonable first choice. Its Playwright route uses Pytest for end-to-end tests. This is a conditional recommendation, not a claim that Python is objectively easiest for every learner.
Choose JavaScript or TypeScript for web automation
If your near-term goal is browser testing with Playwright or Cypress, JavaScript or TypeScript connects directly to that target. Playwright’s Node.js runner includes parallelization, screenshot assertions, an HTML reporter, and tracing, so the runner and its surrounding ecosystem are part of the choice—not just the language syntax.

Choose the team’s language when you need to contribute there
If the project already uses Selenium, learning the language used by its existing tests is usually the most direct workplace path. AT*SQA advises considering the team’s established choice, commonly Java or C#, while noting that Python and Ruby can also be used with Selenium WebDriver. If the team uses Java or .NET with Playwright, its documented test integrations offer routes for those ecosystems too.
How Playwright’s language support differs
Playwright documents JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, and .NET. Core browser automation is supported across them, but the test-running integration varies:

What to learn beyond language syntax
Programming helps testers automate checks, but language knowledge alone does not make testing effective. Build skills around the work: understand the behavior under test, write checks that produce useful results, and learn how automation fits the team’s development and testing process.

Capture a page with one GET request
After getting an API key, a basic cURL request can save a screenshot of a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
In this example, replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns a screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF; consult the documentation for request parameters and output configuration.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Popularity claims and choosing with current evidence
A historical ISTQB survey received more than 2,000 responses from 92 countries in 2017–18. It is not a current workforce sample and does not rank programming languages used by testers. Its published findings identify test automation as an area for improvement and discuss anticipated testing trends at that time, but they cannot establish a present-day language popularity winner. ISTQB’s survey page provides the historical context.
Accordingly, do not treat an unsupported popularity ranking as a substitute for checking the language used in your target job, team, or tool ecosystem. For a beginner without that constraint, choose between Python for broader coding practice and JavaScript/TypeScript for an immediate Playwright or Cypress web-testing goal.
