Zuul is an open-source Layer 7 application gateway from Netflix for teams that need to route requests between clients and backend services. It combines dynamic routing with inbound, endpoint, and outbound filters, authentication, rate limiting, load shedding, monitoring, and request or response processing. Its protocol coverage includes HTTP, HTTP/2, WebSocket, and Server-Sent Events, while authentication can use filters, mutual TLS, or custom authentication handlers. The clearest audience is an engineering team operating a self-hosted gateway in a legacy Netflix-stack environment.

Its ecosystem fit is a central strength. Zuul provides service discovery through Eureka and configurable server lists, and its listed integrations include Ribbon, Archaius, Hystrix, Turbine, Redis, Cassandra, and Amazon DynamoDB. That makes the gateway relevant where these Netflix-oriented components or supporting data stores already shape the service architecture. Traffic controls extend beyond basic routing: teams can apply rate limits, load shedding, monitoring, metrics, traffic insights, and header transformations. WebSocket and Server-Sent Events support also broadens its role beyond conventional request-response APIs.

The trade-off is operational scope. Zuul is distributed for self-hosted deployment, so the adopting team owns the gateway environment and its surrounding operation. Its feature set is broad across routing, filtering, security, resiliency, observability, and connection handling, but the positioning is more focused than a general-purpose gateway choice for every architecture. Teams maintaining a legacy Netflix-oriented stack should consider Zuul when Eureka-based discovery and filter-driven traffic control align with their design. Teams seeking a managed service, a wider deployment model, or built-in AI capabilities should choose an alternative.
