Zstandard, also called zstd, is an open-source lossless compression algorithm and reference implementation for real-time data compression. It includes a C library, command-line utility, and APIs for compressing and decompressing data. Developers and infrastructure operators can use it in applications, file-processing workflows, data pipelines, and storage systems across Linux, Windows, and macOS. The product is a strong fit when programmable compression matters more than a graphical archive-management experience.

Its standout feature is control over the compression workflow. Configurable compression levels support different performance and size requirements, while dictionary training and dictionary compression target small data. Multithreaded compression can support higher-throughput workloads, and streaming input and output fit processing pipelines. Checksums provide integrity verification, while the seekable format uses independently compressed frames. These capabilities make Zstandard particularly suitable for software integrations and infrastructure workflows that need compression behavior to be configured rather than handled as a fixed desktop utility.

Zstandard is free and open source, with no paid tier described. Alongside its native .zst format, the category specifications list .gz, .xz, and .lz4 among its archive formats. The trade-off is focus: encryption, archive repair, and volume-style archive splitting are not documented product features, and Zstandard is not a conventional archive manager. Choose it for a lightweight, programmable compression layer with command-line and API access. Choose an alternative if you need an archive-focused interface or built-in encryption and repair capabilities.
