ZMK Studio review
A focused, free tool for configuring compatible ZMK wireless keyboards.

ZMK Studio is a web and native desktop application for configuring compatible keyboards running ZMK firmware. It is aimed at users who want to adjust keymaps on supported ZMK boards without replacing the keyboard’s firmware configuration for every change. The application runs across Windows, macOS, and Linux, and its runtime features are designed for compatible keyboards rather than general keyboard or mouse customization.
Its strongest area is runtime keymap control. Users can change mappings while the keyboard is in use, connect through USB, and configure through Bluetooth Low Energy on supported clients. ZMK Studio supports assigning predefined and user-defined behaviors to keys, renaming layers, enabling extra layers, and selecting alternative predefined physical layouts. The Restore Stock Settings option removes Studio customizations, providing a direct way to return to the keyboard’s stock configuration.
The main consideration is compatibility. Keyboard firmware must be built with ZMK Studio support, and only compatible keyboards can use its runtime configuration features, so it is not a universal utility for keyboards or mice. The published capability list also identifies macro configuration as planned rather than currently supported. Choose ZMK Studio if your board and firmware meet its requirements and you want open-source, cross-platform runtime keymap management. Choose an alternative if you need broad device coverage, conventional macro configuration, or support for hardware outside the ZMK ecosystem.
