ZeroTier review
Flexible encrypted virtual networking with broad deployment options, but limited native monitoring.

ZeroTier is a software-defined networking platform for connecting devices, people, sites, and cloud environments through encrypted virtual networks. It suits teams replacing a VPN, building SD-WAN deployments, connecting IoT or edge devices, or administering networks across hybrid environments. The platform combines centralized administration through ZeroTier Central with routing, bridging, access policies, distributed traffic-control rules, custom ports and protocols, tags, capabilities, and micro-segmentation. Clients and access options span web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, API, and self-hosted deployments.
The published plans provide a clear progression. Personal is for non-commercial use and includes 10 devices, 1 network, 1 network admin, and community support. Essential costs $18 per month and adds a commercial license, 10 included devices, 10 networks, 5 network admins, API and AI agent access, and OIDC single sign-on. Scale costs $179 per month and includes 100 devices, unlimited networks, 10 network admins, custom flow rules, and ticketed support with SLA. Enterprise offers custom pricing for companies with 500+ devices, compliance requirements, or self-hosted deployments, while Quantum provides custom-priced post-quantum networking for high-security, sovereign, and mission-critical environments.
ZeroTier’s strongest fit is breadth across environments: it supports major cloud platforms, Terraform-based infrastructure provisioning, a central API, webhooks, physical-network routing and bridging, and self-hosted or air-gapped enterprise deployment. That makes it suitable for organizations needing flexible network connectivity rather than a narrowly scoped VPN client. Its tradeoff is management depth: network monitoring is not built into the platform’s documented dashboard capabilities and can be built with Prometheus and Grafana. Choose ZeroTier for programmable, multi-environment virtual networking; choose an alternative when native monitoring is a primary requirement.
