Zentyal Server review
A capable small-business firewall and directory platform with free and supported editions.

Zentyal Server is a Linux-based, self-hosted platform for small and mid-sized organizations that want firewall, directory and core network services in one deployment. It combines native Active Directory compatibility with file sharing, mail, DNS, DHCP, VPN, HTTP proxy, certification authority and gateway functions. The firewall handles internal, external and server traffic, with packet filtering, inbound and outbound rules, connection logging, IDS/IPS and routing configuration. It can run on physical hardware, virtual machines or cloud instances.
Pricing is divided into three editions. The Development Edition is free and community supported, and includes Zentyal 8.1, firewall and IDS/IPS capabilities, VPNs and gateway services. The Annual Subscription costs $230 per server per year and adds one-server coverage, software and security updates, version upgrades and technical support. The Lifetime License costs $460 per server and includes a lifetime license for one server. A 15-day free trial is also available. This structure suits organizations that can manage a self-hosted Linux platform and want to begin without a license fee, then pay for updates and support when required.
Its main strength is breadth within a small-business infrastructure stack: firewall rules can match source, destination, IP address, network object, protocol and ports, while integrations include Microsoft Active Directory, Samba, Netfilter, Squid, Suricata, FreeRADIUS, OpenVPN and IPSec/L2TP. That makes Zentyal Server a practical fit for teams consolidating directory, gateway and security services. Organizations seeking broader firewall management capabilities or a more specialized enterprise firewall platform should consider alternatives with greater management depth.
