XZ Utils is a free, open-source compression implementation for GNU/Linux, macOS/Darwin, Windows, and other listed Unix-like systems. It is aimed at developers, system administrators, software distributors, and anyone building command-line, scripting, or library-based compression workflows. The toolkit centers on .xz, supports legacy .lzma files and raw compressed streams, and can decompress .lz files. It includes the xz compressor and decompressor, the smaller xzdec decompression-only tool, the liblzma API, and shell utilities such as xzgrep and xzdiff.

Its strongest fit is a configurable compression pipeline rather than a graphical file-management workflow. The command-line tools expose compression and decompression operations, while liblzma supports integration into software that needs the underlying compression library. Configurable compression filters and block sizes provide control over processing behavior. For .xz data, CRC32, CRC64, and SHA-256 integrity checks are available. These capabilities make XZ Utils well suited to scripted processing, package and software-distribution workflows, and applications that need format-level control across several operating systems.

The main trade-off is scope. XZ Utils handles compression formats and related utilities, but it is not a general-purpose archive manager: the .xz format holds one file and does not provide archiving capabilities. It also has no archive encryption or split-archive features, and its block feature is not volume-sized archive splitting. Choose XZ Utils when your priority is free, open-source .xz or LZMA compression through commands or an API. Choose a broader archive tool instead when you need archive organization, encryption, or volume-based splitting in the same product.
