XSIBackup is self-hosted backup and replication software for VMware ESXi environments. It runs in the ESXi shell and supports local datastore backups, SSH-based over-IP backups to ESXi or Linux systems, VM replication, deduplication, compression, unlimited restore points, granular file recovery, and cron-based scheduling. XSIBackup-App adds centralized management for multiple ESXi servers. The product is aimed at system administrators and organizations managing on-premises virtualization infrastructure, with coverage for VMware ESXi 5.5–8.0.

The published plans show a Free edition with local backups up to 100GB, community support, and compatibility with VMware ESXi Free Edition. Pro adds local and over-IP backups, checksum differential, cloud backup to any SSH server, and email helpdesk support. DC adds full Changed Block Tracking support and an instant differential feature, while also including cloud backup to any SSH server and email helpdesk support. Pro renewal and DC renewal are optional renewal subscriptions. The product page shows prices in EUR and USD, and the Free edition continues local backups up to 100GB after the trial period.

XSIBackup’s strongest fit is a focused VMware deployment that needs self-hosted control, SSH targets, Synology NAS, NFS, or XSIDirector connectivity. Its feature set covers core backup, replication, recovery, and multi-server administration without extending beyond the VMware ESXi ecosystem. It is less suitable for teams requiring immutable storage, application-aware backup, or instant VM recovery. Choose it for straightforward ESXi protection with local or offsite targets; consider an alternative when broader hypervisor coverage or those recovery and security capabilities are central requirements.

XSIBackup pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Supports local, SSH-based over-IP, and offsite backups
    • Includes deduplication, compression, replication, and unlimited restore points
    • Centralizes multiple ESXi servers through XSIBackup-App
  • Where it doesn't
    • VMware ESXi only, with no broader hypervisor coverage
    • Lacks immutable storage and application-aware backup
    • Instant VM recovery is not included
