Xen Orchestra is a web- and API-based management appliance for XCP-ng and XenServer environments. It centralizes administration of pools, hosts, virtual machines, storage, and networks, with backup and disaster-recovery tools for operators, system administrators, and DevOps teams responsible for virtual infrastructure. Its free feature set and open-source status may suit cost-conscious teams; a 30-day Premium trial is also available. Deployment is self-hosted, either as a pre-built appliance or installed from source.

For recovery work, Xen Orchestra supports agentless full and incremental VM backups, restore, and replication to another host. Backup mirroring and immutability, alongside backup health and recovery checks, add protection and validation options. These capabilities support recovery workflows, but the product does not provide automated failover or runbooks. Teams seeking orchestration that executes a coordinated recovery sequence should compare alternatives; Xen Orchestra is a closer fit for teams that want to manage and protect their XCP-ng or XenServer VMs.

Automation and packaging are important buying considerations. The REST API, CLI, and infrastructure-as-code tooling work with Terraform, Ansible, Pulumi, Packer, PowerShell, and Kubernetes. Role-based access and delegation support administration across teams. According to the published plans, Vates sells VMS bundles that include a Xen Orchestra Appliance: Essential includes XCP-ng support licenses, Essential + adds complete feature access, Pro includes the appliance, and Enterprise includes the appliance plus 24/7 support. The published pricing is for these bundles, not a standalone Xen Orchestra subscription. Choose it when self-hosted virtual infrastructure management, backup, and automation are the priority; look elsewhere if automated failover and runbook orchestration are requirements.

    • Paid options are sold in Vates VMS bundles, not as a standalone subscription
