Workflow Engine is an embeddable .NET and .NET Core library for automating stateful business processes inside applications and self-hosted services. It is suited to development teams building document approvals, routing, task assignment, and other long-running workflows. The browser-based HTML5 designer supports process schemes, activities, transitions, commands, timers, actions, parallel branches, and workflow version control. Support for web, Windows, macOS, Linux, APIs, and self-hosted deployment gives teams several ways to incorporate it into an existing application estate.
Pricing follows a freemium model. The Free Community Edition is intended for non-commercial and educational use and includes the fundamental feature set. A 30-day free trial is also available. Commercial licensing is handled through a meeting with the vendor. Buyers should therefore assess the free edition against their use case early, then discuss commercial terms with Optimajet Limited if the workflow will support a commercial application or service.
The product’s strongest fit is controlled workflow execution inside a .NET environment. It can persist processes in SQL and NoSQL databases, import and export workflows as XML, record process logs, transition history, runtime events, and approval history, and expose both HTTP and direct .NET runtime APIs. Database options include SQL Server, Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB, Azure Cosmos DB, and SQLite; framework integrations include React, Angular, and Blazor. Choose Workflow Engine when self-hosting, embedded .NET execution, approvals, and workflow control matter most. Look elsewhere if you need a broadly platform-neutral orchestration product or a fully managed deployment model.
Workflow Engine pros and cons
- Where it wins

- SQL and NoSQL persistence with versioning, branching, and runtime logs
- HTTP and direct .NET APIs plus broad database and framework support
- Where it doesn't
- Commercial licensing requires a vendor meeting
- Free Community Edition is limited to non-commercial and educational use
- Self-hosted deployment places implementation and operations responsibility on the buyer
