Our verdict on Wintertrace

Wintertrace is self-hosted, open-source software for snow removal and winter-service documentation. It is aimed at small winter-service operators and teams that need evidence of completed work rather than a full dispatch, routing, CRM, property management, or billing system. The software records GPS tracks through OwnTracks, captures weather conditions at operation start and end, and stores photos and notes with timestamps and GPS metadata. It also supports driver, vehicle, role, team, and shift management, with CSV export for shift records.

The core software is free under AGPLv3, while hosting costs are separate. A 48-hour live installation is available as a temporary demo and is deleted automatically. Wintertrace runs on web and self-hosted deployments using PHP and MySQL/MariaDB web hosting, with data stored on the operator’s infrastructure. Its ecosystem is focused rather than broad: OwnTracks provides GPS tracking, while Open-Meteo, Bright Sky, and MET Norway support weather capture, and SMTP supports email delivery. Data anonymisation, retention policies, and export give operators control over how operational records are handled.

Its standout use case is service proof. Wintertrace combines location, weather, timestamped media, notes, operation details, and PDF generation, then gives customers portal access to completed operations and documents. That makes it a practical fit for teams that need a documented record of winter-service work.
