WinConn is an open-source Ubuntu Linux desktop application for creating and managing profiles for Windows RemoteApp applications. Instead of presenting a full remote Windows desktop, it displays remote applications in their own windows through RemoteApp technology implemented by FreeRDP. Its intended audience is Ubuntu users who need convenient access to individual Windows applications rather than a complete remote desktop session.

The workflow centers on reusable application profiles and desktop integration. WinConn can create desktop launchers, place remote applications in the Unity menu, and provide an application indicator for faster execution. Local folders can be accessed from remote applications, while printer and sound redirection connect selected local resources to the remote session. Profile imports from Remmina and remote-application imports from RDP files can reduce repetitive configuration when existing connection details are available. FreeRDP and Remmina are the key ecosystem connections.

WinConn’s narrow Ubuntu focus is both its defining strength and its main boundary. The published installation instructions target Ubuntu packages for versions 12.04 and 12.10, and the documentation covers compatibility with legacy Windows versions. Clipboard redirection does not currently work, which can limit everyday movement of text between local and remote applications. Choose WinConn when Ubuntu desktop integration, RemoteApp presentation, and local resource redirection matter more than broad platform coverage or a full remote desktop-management feature set. Users seeking a wider operating-system scope, current installation targets, or clipboard redirection should consider an alternative.
