Win9xplorer review
A free, open-source Windows 95/98-style shell replacement with broad taskbar controls.

Win9xplorer is a native Windows shell replacement for people who want a Windows 95/98-style desktop experience on Windows 10 or Windows 11. It replaces the standard shell with a classic Start menu, taskbar, system tray, clock, Quick Launch, task windows, and taskbar context actions. The Start menu also provides search, system tools, and common folders, while a classic file explorer and Task Manager utility window extend the retro desktop beyond appearance alone.
The product is free and open source, with source code published under the GNU GPL. Its feature set focuses on recreating a complete shell rather than adding a small Start menu skin. The taskbar includes an address bar for web URLs and local paths, configurable appearance and behavior, and a Spotify toolbar. That combination gives Win9xplorer more functional range than a purely visual theme, while keeping its design centered on the Windows 95/98 model. Spotify is the named integration, and Windows is the supported platform.
Win9xplorer is a strong fit for open-source users who specifically want a retro Windows workflow, classic navigation, and extensive taskbar controls without a paid plan. Its shell-replacement mode is also a defining choice: users get a broader desktop transformation instead of an isolated Start menu change. That focus can make it less suitable for people seeking a modern, broadly styled customization tool or a platform beyond Windows. Choose Win9xplorer when period-style interaction is the goal; choose a more general customization approach when the retro shell is not central to the experience.
