Our verdict on Wikibase Cloud
Wikibase Cloud is a hosted platform for creating and operating Wikibase instances without managing infrastructure. It is designed for individuals and groups that collaboratively curate public, structured knowledge in cultural, scientific, and other data-rich projects. Users can publish knowledge bases, model linked open data, query it through the integrated SPARQL Query Service, and access Wikibase functionality through APIs. The service is operated by Wikimedia Deutschland and supports web and API access.
Its strongest fit is the combination of structured-data capabilities and a public publishing model. Collaborative editing and curation are central, while linked open data modeling gives teams a way to represent relationships beyond conventional article pages. The SPARQL Query Service supports direct data queries, and Wikibase and MediaWiki API access extends the platform for connected applications and workflows. Custom domain support also helps public projects present an independent web address. Daily backups with seven days of retention add a defined recovery feature for hosted instances.
Wikibase Cloud is free to use and includes hosted instances, structured-data editing, linked-data modeling, query access, APIs, custom domains, and backups. Its narrow focus is also its main boundary: teams looking primarily for document authoring, article-based navigation, or a general internal knowledge base may find the Wikibase model more specialized than necessary. Public-facing data communities, research projects, and organizations that need queryable linked data should consider it first. Teams seeking a conventional article-focused knowledge base or a private-first workspace should look for a product centered on those needs instead.
